Humanity has finally reached the point where we’re using science to answer questions like: “What if I yeeted a bowling ball into the deepest trench on Earth?”
This video from XKCD’s “What if” explores exactly that. Turns out most bowling balls actually FLOAT, which makes the phrase “sank like a bowling ball” complete nonsense. But a heavier ball would slowly sink through the Mariana Trench for over two hours before hitting bottom. Meanwhile, a lightweight ball could spend years drifting across the Pacific Ocean, eventually ending up on a shore somewhere, or in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
And yes, the video also calculates how fast a solid gold bowling ball would sink, because apparently rich supervillains need hobbies too.
