Some stories never really end, they just wait for the right moment to call us back.
And if the latest rumors are true, that call might be coming straight from the Shire, because Sean Astin is reportedly returning as Sam in The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. Yes, that Sam. Loyal, brave, potato-loving Sam. The emotional backbone of the original journey. And suddenly, this new Middle-earth project feels a lot more real.
Warner Bros. is developing Shadow of the Past as something a little different from what we’ve seen before. Instead of retelling familiar ground, the film reaches back into The Fellowship of the Ring and pulls from chapters that never made it into The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. That means we could finally see missing moments from the books brought to life, including Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, and the eerie Barrow-wights.
But this isn’t just a “deleted scenes” movie. The story also moves forward. Set fourteen years after Frodo’s departure, it follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace the first steps of their legendary adventure. At the same time, Sam’s daughter Elanor stumbles onto a buried secret, one that suggests the War of the Ring was nearly lost before it even began.
And then there’s the wildcard: Stephen Colbert co-writing the script alongside Peter McGee. It might sound unexpected at first, but Colbert is famously one of the most passionate Tolkien fans out there. The man knows his lore. If anything, his involvement might be exactly what this kind of project needs, someone who understands both the heart of the books and the expectations set by the films.
Of course, no official word yet on whether Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan will return, but let’s be honest: if Sam is setting out on one last journey, it would feel downright wrong without Merry and Pippin at his side.
Meanwhile, Middle-earth isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The Hunt for Gollum is also on the way, with Andy Serkis stepping into the director’s chair, and the original creative team, including Peter Jackson, still closely involved. Warner Bros. seems committed to expanding Tolkien’s world carefully, with one foot in nostalgia and the other stepping into new territory.
Right now, Shadow of the Past feels like a fascinating gamble. It’s revisiting old roads, uncovering forgotten corners, and potentially giving us one more journey with characters we’ve loved for over two decades.
And if Samwise Gamgee really is coming back?
Well… there’s no adventure in Middle-earth that couldn’t use a little more Sam.
