Long before CGI artists spent months rendering explosions and glowing portals, animator Mike Jittlov was out there doing movie magic the old-fashioned way: with a camera, stop-motion tricks, time-lapse wizardry, and what was probably an alarming amount of patience.
His short film The Wizard of Speed and Time is a delightful burst of handmade movie magic from 1979. Shot on 16mm using time-lapse, stop-motion, and plenty of practical effects, the film follows a wizard zipping around the world performing magical feats at impossible speeds.
What makes it especially fun is how inventive it is. With little more than a camera, clever editing, and a lot of imagination, Jittlov creates effects that still feel charming today, even in an age where computers can do almost anything.
