The latest Xbox Developer Direct delivered a quick but very promising gameplay trailer for Fable, finally confirming a long-awaited release window. The reboot is set to launch in Autumn 2026 on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5, and for longtime fans, that last part is especially exciting.
I played the original Fable back in 2004 on the first Xbox, and it instantly became one of those games that sticks with you. But after making the jump to PlayStation, I never ended up playing the sequels. So hearing that this new Fable will be fully playable on PS5 feels like a long-overdue reunion with Albion.
The reboot is being developed by Playground Games, the studio behind the wildly successful Forza Horizon. This time, Albion will be a fully open world with free exploration across the entire map, a major graphical leap forward, and a level of detail that includes more than a thousand NPCs, each with their own schedules. Players will be able to buy virtually any house or business they come across, shaping their place in the world as much through everyday actions as through epic quests.
One of the biggest changes comes from the revamped morality system. Instead of a simple good-versus-evil meter, the new Fable focuses on the subtle consequences of your actions and what others witness you doing. Choices still matter, combat still blends melee weapons, ranged options, and magic, and the story once again takes place in Albion, roughly 100 years after the events of the previous games. Familiar enemies like Hobbes and Trolls are returning too, and yes, Playground has confirmed there will be “quite a few chickens.”
It’s still a bit of a wait, but between the classic Fable tone, the modern open-world design, and the fact that PlayStation players can finally join the fun, this reboot is shaping up to be something special. And honestly? I’m just happy I’ll finally get back to kicking chickens again, this time on a DualSense controller!
