When Disney World’s Indiana Jones Boulder Decides the Audience Looks Like a Threat

Indiana Jones Boulder

You know a stunt show is really committed to authenticity when it briefly considers sacrificing the audience to the gods of archaeology.

In the most famous scene from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy outruns a gigantic stone boulder triggered by ancient booby traps. It’s a cinematic classic. It is not, however, meant to be a participation sport.

But during a recent Indiana Jones stunt show at Walt Disney World, the 400-pound rubber “boulder” decided it was tired of following the script. As you’ll see in the video, the prop slipped off its track and began rolling toward the audience.

Enter the real hero of the story: a Disney staff member who intercepted the runaway boulder with his own body like a human sandbag. He was injured but is thankfully recovering, and Disney says the show schedule continues as normal.

Lesson learned: some movie magic should stay in the movies. Also, Indiana Jones rides are fun, but Indiana Jones audience participation is where we draw the line.
