Han Shoots First (Again!): Original 1977 Star Wars Returns to Theaters in 2027

Star Wars 50th Anniversary
Lucasfilm

Stop the presses, reload the blasters, and someone please check on George Lucas — because the impossible is actually happening. After decades of “It’ll never happen,” “Over my dead Bantha,” and “That version doesn’t represent my true artistic vision,” the original, unaltered 1977 Star Wars — yes, the one where Han shoots first without hesitation, paperwork, or moral reflection — is officially returning to theaters for a limited run in February 2027.

For the first time in over forty years, fans will get to relive Star Wars exactly as audiences experienced it in 1977: No CGI aliens randomly strolling through Mos Eisley like they’re lost. No surprise musical numbers. No mysteriously growing rocks hiding smuggler shenanigans. Just pure, untouched, retro Star Wars magic blasting straight into your eyeballs.

For years, everyone assumed this cut was locked in a Lucasfilm vault somewhere between the Ark of the Covenant and George’s personal stash of flannel. Even the 1995 VHS release teased us with “The original, one last time,” which we now know apparently meant, “Okay, maybe one more… in 2027.”

Rumors about a restored print have been swirling for months, especially after a rare cleaned-up version of the original film screened in the U.K. last year. Now Lucasfilm has confirmed it: a newly restored version of the classic 1977 theatrical cut is getting a limited release on February 19, 2027 — almost exactly 30 years after the Special Edition hit theaters.

And because Star Wars announcements can never be straightforward, there’s talk that this February release might be separate from the already-listed April 30 re-release date. Could multiple versions be hitting theaters? Could the Special Edition get its own IMAX run? Could Greedo finally stop insisting he shot first? The galaxy is full of mysteries.

One thing’s certain: this is a seismic moment for Star Wars fans. We’re finally getting the chance to see Star Wars just as the world originally fell in love with it
