Can You Keep the Sun Up Just by Driving West?

Ever looked at a gorgeous sunset and thought, “What if I just keep driving west and never let it end?” Well, according to science, you can, but only if your car can hit half the speed of sound.

In this video from Xkcd’s What If?, the host crunches the math to find out how long you can stretch out a sunset while obeying the speed limit and sticking to paved roads.

Even in northern Norway, where the sun basically takes coffee breaks instead of setting, you’d still need to cruise at Mach 0.5 to keep up. But with the right timing inside the Arctic Circle, you can manage a 95-minute sunset, which is just long enough to make every golden-hour influencer jealous!

And if that fails, there’s always Plan B: spin counterclockwise to slow the Earth’s rotation. Sure, it only buys you a few nanoseconds, but hey, every bit of sunset counts!
