After years of rumors and radio silence, the secret’s out — and it was worth the wait. At Star Wars Celebration Tokyo, Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling took the stage to confirm that their mysterious Star Wars project is very real… and very ambitious. Titled Star Wars: Starfighter, the standalone film will hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
Set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, Starfighter promises a bold new direction for the franchise. Levy laid it out clearly:
This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure.
Gosling, clearly thrilled to be part of the galaxy far, far away, added:
Such a great story with great and original characters. So much heart and adventure. There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.
The film is being co-written by Levy and Jonathan Tropper, and it’s been in the works behind closed blast doors for the past two years. While Lucasfilm continues developing other post-Skywalker stories, Starfighter is flying solo — and fast-tracked to launch.
Production begins this fall — and with Gosling in the cockpit and Levy calling the shots, Starfighter could be the fresh burst of hyperspace energy the franchise didn’t know it needed.
The Force is changing course — and it sounds like Starfighter is ready to lead the way.
