Early reviews of Mortal Kombat X are generally positive, but it’s clear the game is very much shaped to the 2015 gaming market. As well as buying new fighters as DLC, there’s an option to make micropayments to get “easy fatalities.”
Using an easy fatality means being able to carry out the ultimate in finishing moves with simplified controls compared to the usual requirement to not only hit a half-dozen commands but to perfectly time the sequence.
The ability to use an easy fatality is among the unlockable features in the game, but as with most unlockables, you’ll be able to pay to get it straight away. The list of add-ons/downloadable content for the game includes two packs of easy fatalities: five for 99 cents or 30 for $4.99. It also appears the easy fatalities will be included in a $20 package that instantly unlocks all unlockable features in the game.
Gamers seem divided between those who think it’s a harmless feature that doesn’t affect the core gameplay for those who choose not to play, and those who object to the principle of charging to make the game easier and worry it might set a precedent for developers to intentionally make some parts of the game so hard that many people feel forced to stump up extra cash.
There is some good news for people who aren’t keen on microtransactions however. While the game will feature an ongoing range of additional DLC characters, including other licenses such as Jason Voorhees, there’ll be a rotating option to try out playing a specific character even if you haven’t bought him or her.
