  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the point of the original illusion that the shadowing coming from the pillar makes them give off the same color, not that they literally are the same color?

  2. No, it is that they look different colours(shades since they are black/grey/white), but are in fact the same colour(shade).
