New Intelligent Speed Bump Retracts for Vigilant Drivers

Most people find speed bump irritating. For those with a heavy foot, these bumps can have all sorts of undesirable effects on your car. But, when you have kids and live on a street where people speed, you realize the necessity..

Enter the intelligent speed bump by Mexico’s Decano Industries. With this clever new technology, Decano’s speed bumps will retract themselves automatically for cautious drivers who are going “slow enough”. And these safety devices aren’t even that expensive at $1500 a piece.

  1. That a remarkably shoddy demonstration video.

Also, $1,500 for a speed bump is exceptionally expensive. That's probably at least 5x as expensive as standard speed bump now, labor, materials, installation… total.

Not to mention that's just the purchase cost, not the cost to dig the holes in the street for these, install them, install the street sensors and then the continuing long term maintenance costs of a electronics package that is going to get continual abuse.

  3. We got 2 of these similar types in Malmoe Sweden. But they are used in areas where only very slow speeds are allowed, like in areas with a lot of kids, or on streets where a lot of accidents due to high speed occur.

And some drivers have broken their cars hitting these bumps at high speed. I think they are great, not only does it teach the morons to not drive fast there, but it makes them pay for it as well.

our got a mechanism that raises them up from the ground, as these looked like you still experience a bump, they never get even with the rest of the road.

    • dare I point out the company is based in mexico? regardless of the "skill" with which the video is made it gets the point across.

These look pretty cool, sure it may not be perfectly flat when it's down, but that's a lot better than making even the slow moving people bounce their cars around going over speedbumps. From the looks of it they also just sit on top of the road, which would be really nice in places where temporary speedbumps are used (here we have a road that is used for a race once a year but they don't want people racing all the time, so very large and awkward "temporary" speedbumps and put in place. anyone with a sports car as to creep over to avoid damage)
