The first RPG, Dungeons and Dragons, was directly based on Tolkien’s work, and it inspired the entire genre afterwards. Almost all of them use “experience points” (often shortened to “experience”) to quantify what the character has learned and translate that into increased abilities.
Thus two potential readings:
A: you need experience(s) to get experience (points)
B: you need experience points to get the high level abilities required to earn even more experience points
Alternatively, it could also mean that Frodo needs to get laid in order to level up, or visa-versa.
Yep. And I hate it as well (just like the other 400billion-odd people in this world—excuse my poor geography).
