Origami Leaf Katydid by Brian Chan. All images © Brian Chan
Brian Chan has a knack for folding squares into other stuff. Every one of these insects (or sea creatures) is crafted from a single piece of paper, usually a square. Aside from being astoundingly complex, Chan’s work is also easily recognizable: look at the blunted folds, heavy wrinkling, rolled limbs, and choices in paper. Flip through the artist’s Flickr stream a few times and you could probably spot a Brian Chan origami creature on sight out in the wild. (Which would be more welcome than meeting the living versions of most of these in the wild, probably.)
- Goliathus goliathus
- Lucanus cervus
- Shrimp
- Cyclommatus metalifer
- (Flying) Hercules Beetle
- Scutigera — “Centipede varileg”
- Horsefly
- Water Strider
- Fiddler Crab
- Dragonfly
Chan also folds barnyard animals, dragons, fictional characters and various other awesome things. Check out his work on Flickr.

I love how I saw the pic before reading the title and thought to myself “oh that looks like Brian Chan’s work” and I saw the title and thought oh yeah it is…
It’s really distinct. Interesting to see signatures like that in folded paper.
Why the hell would you go out of your way to make an apartment centipede out of origami???
