Their claws are nowhere near hard enough to scratch the screen. My wife's 2 year old ipad that has never had a screen guard on it at all gets abuse by our cats almost nightly with no scratches whatsoever. Even the 15lb Scooter doesn't hurt it.
It'd do more damage to the screen protector than it would to the screen.
