[GAS] Site Redesign: What do you guys think?

Hey Everyone! We’ve just finished implementing our new custom WordPress template. We’ve increase the site’s font size to improve its readability and increased the width of the content section so that we can now put bigger pictures and videos. We’ve also added a featured section on top to showcase the current featured posts. And no, you don’t have to worry, we won’t be going the Gizmodo way anytime soon.

What do you guys think? Have you stumbled on any bugs yet? Is there anything that annoys you beyond measure? Anything you’d change? Please let us know in the comments section below!

Kudos to the folks over at Businesslogs for such a great job! If you’re looking for an affordable custom WordPress template, be sure to contact these guys for a quotation!

    • Yes, i liked the old site design better. most sites are so white it hurts my eyes, but i still love the blog. i'll keep visiting (: and i'm sure i'll get used to it.

  1. oh… ist it really necessary to keep it so white? Geeks are sexy – black is sexy, so I would prefer it more dark!
Beside this its just unusual. I'll get used to it ;) I won't stop visiting this blog.

  2. Need to lose the chick… its a stock photo and I see it everywhere. Don't get me wrong.. she's cute.. but its just not unique.

  3. I like it!
But maybe there could me a little more contrasting on the articles.
Also, I should add that I like the last logo better then the current one!

  4. I like the new redesign, much better than the who Gawker debacle anyway. I think there is too much white though. The very top of the site looks fine, color/white ratio, but once you scroll down further into the article and comments the abundance of white gets to be too much.

  5. I like the colors, but I rather did prefer the older design. This sort of looks more like a tech gadget retail sales site.
I've mentioned dislike about this image of the girl before because it seems very UN-geek like for her to look at the readers instead of her computer screen. True geeks would be more interested in what's on their computer screen. Plus we don't get to see that beautiful sexy arch in her back.

I liked the gray/silver tones better, and the details. I like the comments being at the top. I'll still keep GAS in my Safari wall, and read as always. Maybe I just need to get used to this. Somehow I just thought the other design was so much more cool. Change is always good, but I liked it better before. More detail, less bright white. Sorry, but that's my honest opinion, you're free to disagree with.

  6. Not so fan either. Am not crazy about the featured section, what do you guys list as featured? Most commented? Coolest articles? Personal choices?.. Why 2 search buttons? About the design, plain white is fine when using a lot of typography, doesnt work much in gas' case cos the site is full of pictures, videos, ads… and overall still heavy to load, 72 external Javascript scripts!

    • Personal Choice for the featured section… I'll remove the second search button soon.. it's only there as a test :)

  7. I'm unsure about the red top bar-thing, it kind of draws the attention away from the "Geeks Are Sexy" logo, and I had to double-check where I was in my adress bar :P

And please, don't ever go the Gizmodo way… >.>

  8. Agreed. The old design was much friendlier and easier to read. This – like all the gawker media changes recently – are really steps backwards in usability.

  9. i like the new design. It's clean and crisp, and on top of that, sexy geeky girl (on top of the page) is looking at me now !!

  10. Firefox seems to be having a few issues with the embedded videos, linking the still images from other videos on the page rather than the one it should be. Also, some images don’t want to load and instead just leave a large gap in the text.

  11. I don't want to have any Web Designers get in trouble for this, but since you asked: "As a Web Master myself, I do not like this version as much as the original site. This looks like every other site out there, too much 'Web 2.0" look for me. I like your simpler original version. It would be nice to be able to switch back-n-forth as a visitor."

  12. I found a bug… sort of. When you highlight text, the box that indicates the text selection extends all the way to the right, beyond the limits of the text, and into the "ads and categories" zone.

    • Also, the "Features stories" box covers part of the "Geek lady" logo. But this may have something to do with me using Adblock, so I don't see a banner that's supposed to be there. I'm using Google Chrome, by the way.

        • Yeah… Now it works! Even with Adblock :) But I felt bad after saying I use Adblock on your site, and now I disabled it on GAS.

  13. I'm sorry, I got distracted by the Jade in her Mortal Combat Cosplay outfit and did not notice the redesign for awhile.

Looks fine to me, but could use a little less white. It makes me think this is a Google site.

  14. Keep the girl looking at me, it's necessary for my ego. Site design is not bad, just getting used to the new stuff, I'm sure it'll be fine. Not like Lifehacker, oi.

    • She's looking at ME, mi5key, hate to disappoint you … BTW anybosy know how I can DL full size versions of both pics — new and old?

  15. It's a clean redesign. I know that some prefer the old setup (and really, it may be due to familiarity or simple preference), but the usability, readability, and ease of access to articles is there.

I never really bothered to look before, but the present (new) layout is very navigable. The colors work well, as it has a slight clean, but business of The Reg, while being warm (go, go red!) and inviting.

You didn't Gawker your site, and that's a good thing. As a daily reader (first time commenter), I'm adding my approval to the tally.

  16. I rather like the cleanliness of the new whiter design. (The features bar is especially lovely.)

My favorite thing, though, is the tagline change. [GAS] is definitely about more than tech, and I love that the new header acknowledges that. :)

  17. Firefox seems to be having a few issues with the embedded videos, linking the still images from other videos on the page rather than the one it should be. Also, some images don't want to load and instead just leave a large gap in the text.

    • i liked the old design better…now it seems to require me to do the whole connect thing if i want to post anything on facebook…which i have no wish to do, i would rather go here and check the new post…not have even more things i may or may not want to see on my facebook. The page needs alot more contrast as is stands now it is seems like it is much harder on the eyes

  18. reading through all the comments I pretty much agree with a lot of them. The girl seems off. Too much white and it does look like I'm at a site to buy wholesale computer parts. I've only recently started reading/subscribing via RSS to this blog so I vaguely remember the old site. Could you include a screengrab of that?

    • It's loading an UberMedia ad in the comment area, so I can't even create a new thread, only reply to someone else…!

I'm with "This looks like every other site out there, too much 'Web 2.0" look for me."; it looks awfully generic when you move away from the header. It does seem to load a bit faster though, which is good.

Ohh, another bug: when the comments area start to scroll, half of the bottom line of text is cut off since the box doesn't scroll completely down.

      • An half-hour later, the UberMedia ad is no longer in the comment box. The scrolling issue is still present, in Firefox 3.6.13 using Windows 7.

        • Same here.. Only people in Canada are affected it seems. It's probably going to be resolved before I can put my finger on it.

Wish I could get rid of all of those ads, but unfortunately, donations don't work on websites like mine :(

  19. I liked the old picture of the chick better. Her shirt clashes with the background now, which is not very sexy. Also the red theme and banner looks a little hokey.

  21. the layout is better and the red if a new change for the white I think it looks good, you could change the girl as well :D

  22. The old picture was great for the site, and better than the new one. In this one, the girl is "posing", looking at the camera. In the old one, she's "working" in a straight, sexy pose.
Use the top "red" in the links bar, and leave the top white.

    • The old layout was much better, This layout is not grabbing my attention. The blotted ARIAL BLACK tittles for each article is really putting me off. Don't mind the girl staying, would be cool if she was an illustration. The new header isn't doing much for me either, to much RED, you loose the "Geek are Sexy" the red is to overpowering.

For improvements I think you should bring in some colour to divide up the site, just use grays or blues, the blue from the nav. Change the article tittles to a different font and maybe dull down the red header, or change the colour.

    • Actually, this is related to some external sources… it would have done the same on the old site. We're working on the issue now! :)

  23. Site looks wicked and should inspire many people that use wordpress!
My only complaint of the site currently is that the "Tips & Hacks" writer seems to be all out of ideas and therefore has become mute.
Shame as its one of my favourite sections

  24. Bad, bad, bad. Why does everyone want to redesign everything all the time?
One less reason to visit your blog now, which seems to be turning into a Star Wars fan site lately.
