So, it’s no secret that geek culture, in many ways, is bolstered around the concept of cred. Geek cred. You know what I mean. You don’t sit down at an RPG table for the first time with a new group without mentioning your experience playing various editions and classes. You don’t go to a Jonathan Coulton show without adding that this is the sixteenth time you’ve seen him play. You stop at nothing to pepper your general dialogue with quotes from your favorite films and books. It’s just part of how we do things.
However, there is a line between the truly well-rounded geek elite, and those of us who, well, have a few black holes in our geekery. Wait, what? Am I admitting to not being a flawless geek with a memory of a thousand lifetimes? Yes, in fact I am. There are quite a few geeky mountains that I have as of yet to climb, and some of them might shock you. Don’t go revoking my Geek Card, though. Honestly is the first step toward recovery. Or something.
At times, I’ve been too embarrassed to admit these geeky black holes. And other times, I have very good reasons, I think. So in the spirit of geekiness, and inclusiveness, I thought I’d share a few of my geeky black holes with you, and invite you to share yours in return.
Here goes:
- I have never read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Dune, or anything by Robert Jordan. In regards to Douglas Adams, I tried. I really did. At the time, it just didn’t stick and I haven’t gone back. So when people go on about towels and whatnot, I’m just a bit confused. Maybe someday will be the right time. Dune is a different story; I think I should have read it in high school, just after I finished The Lord of the Rings. But I never picked it up, and haven’t invested the time to do otherwise. Same with Robert Jordan. If I’d started younger, it would likely have worked. But now, I just don’t know if I can commit to that kind of series. Not to mention, I’ve forgotten how to read books without critiquing the hell out of them, and I suspect I’d have issues with Mr. Jordan for that reason.
- I have not seen every episode of Firefly. This, unlike the others, is intentional. I love the show like no other; so much, in fact, that I have purposely saved a few episodes for a time in my life when I really need them. Overly dramatic? Maybe. But Captain Mal and his crew are so dear to me, I just can’t let them go. Not yet. I mean, I know what happens, I saw the film. But I like knowing that, in spite of the show’s heartbreakingly short run, there is more of the adventure to be experienced should I need. You can’t take the sky from me.
- I have never seen Blade Runner. That I remember. I know I saw it at some point when I was very young. I remember bits and pieces. But nothing lingers. I love Harrison Ford. There is no reason for this, and really no excuse. This can, of course, be easily rectified…
Okay, so now that I’ve got those off my chest, it’s your turn! Are there any geeky black holes in your life? Any conversations that leave you high and dry? Come on, ‘fess up!

I have PLENTY of black holes…possibly too many to mention…although you mentioned some of mine too! LOL

I've NEVER seen Star Wars… ;)
I fear I can top that, if "top" is the right word:
Not only have I never seen Star Wars, but the few times I've tried I've had to give up because it always hits me as poorly-written drivel.
I know, I know: check my geek badge at the door…
LOL! Glad to know I'm not alone =)
I finally saw all of star wars. I didn't care for the 3 that were produced first… they were just too old and boring for my taste. I fell asleep at every star wars movie except for the last one. It took me nearly 5 tries each to finally watch the first 3 that were produced..
Personally, I found the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies to be better than all of the Star Wars ones.
I know what you mean. I think the only part I liked about Star Wars–that I've seen–was watching my super Star Wars geek friend play Force Unleashed.

I appreciate your honesty, and it seems that we share one gap, Robert Jordan's series is something that I haven't tackled. Despite some offers by friends to loan me the series, I've hesitated because of the massive scope of the under taking…sigh it's on my geeky bucket list though.
Ugh, I wouldn't try Robert Jordan if I were you. I tried to read the series, but it (to me) was too predictable, cut-and-paste fantasy, and the characters were flat and very boring. Every page was either over or underwritten, and frankly, it just didn't catch my fancy.

I don't think I'll ever be able to read Robert Jordan. My mom is thoroughly OBSESSED with the Wheel of Time series. Killed it for me after she read it for the tenth time in a row. Lol
I fell asleep during Dark Crystal.

I missed Babylon 5.

All three of those, I have not read or seen any.
Any conversation about xbox games I do not understand.
I have not seen any doctor who episodes or movies.

I'm afraid I'll be stripped of my geek cred if I admit that I loathe Harry Potter & Narnia movies. Also, Twilight.
But perhaps I can salvage by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed "Lord of the Rings" and eagerly anticipate the Hobbit remake.
And I did see the original "Tron" in an actual movie theater during the first week it was released, so that should buy me some cred.
Get thee to a Blockbuster and rent "Blade Runner" right away!
You'd be stripped of your Geek rights if you said you actually LIKED Twilight.
I absolutely don't get the appeal of a pasty-faced, poorly-acted, angst-ridden, perpetually-teen vampire, so no, I think "Twilight" series pretty much blows chunks! And I don't understand why soccer Moms are so intensely aroused by it all.
I never got the appeal of Dr. Who or Hitchhiker's Guide, but if it helps restore any lost geek cred, I saw the original "Alien" in a real movie theater. I was about 15 and it scared the hell outta me!
Vampires should not sparkle. Sun + Vampire = Fire.
My boyfriend watches the doctor who stuff. I watched many with him and sure some of it was comical.. but it's like a mix between Lost and a CSI episode thrown in with some Bill Nye gibberish to wrap it up. It doesn't have enough comedy for me to want to watch it in full. It's a jack of all trades.. a little bit of everything.. frankly.. I enjoyed the Bill Nye show more than that. When it comes to geeky space-ish shows.. I think I'll stick with Joss Whedon's Firefly!
Be glad you don't like Twilight- that's mostly pre-teen & teen girls and ? Bram Stoker would probably roll over in grave, and Bela Lugosi would gag if they knew what went on in today's so-called vampire world. (and we might have to revoke your Geek card) Don't worry, I'm pretty sure you're safe. Me, I watched every original Star Trek episode as it came out, only read Dune once, still think the 1st book the best, but I have almost all the Star Trek books (original). Don't understand why they had to blow up the Weasley's house in the movie when there was so much they didn't cover from the book. Actually prefer watching Lord of the Rings over reading it repeatedly, maybe because it's so long, and I love some of the actors in the movie. Refering to Twilight I also don't understand some Moms obsession with it too. Although I'm enjoying watching a new Dr. Who with my youngest daughter, after telling her I had seen Dr. Who with one of the earliest Doctors

I can watch Harry Potter either. I have read a couple of the novels, but just not into it like others I know.
Twilight- BAD! It was written for Tweens and it exploded into the next boy toy parade.
I like Narnia and the first Movie, but I remember watching the BBC TV animation series on PBS it was much more magical.
Reading some of the earlier posts about Star Wars, the original trilogy was cutting edge and if you grew up with it, as I did, it was a true spectacle. I don't blame or hate if people say they are slow and boring, by today's compairison they are.
I actually really hate Star Trek… :O

I hate Dr. Who.
I've never watched a single episode of BSG. Sure, there was the original series, but that was a long time ago and I only remember characters.
I also have no desire to read any of the Dresden Files books…. See More
There are others. Many, I'm sure. Don't judge me!

My confession: When people go on about Frodo – I can't relate. *gasp*
I've read all Douglas Adams but I only made it halfway through the Hobbit. While I respect Tolkein immensely he bores me to exhaustion.
Can we still be friends? :)
I confess I prefer to watch the Lord of the Rings movies, I have read all the books, although I couldn't get through the Silmarillian (sure this is mispeld because I never finished it) Tolkien is really wordy, so if I do pick the books up, I usually only read choice parts, but I'm glad he wrote them so the characters can all exist in our combined fantasy world.
Just do what I do to almost every book I read. When authors start getting into too much detail about a surrounding or a minor character that you do not facy.. just skip to the "" quotations.. It helps me get through a lot of books. Some authors may be passionate about their readers "truly seeing their art" but many of us just don't care. We enjoy the books for the plot and the characters.. not how well painted the house is that they are visiting.
If the authors aren't passionate about the descriptions then they are just meant as filler and they probably assume you skip it anyways. They've got to meet their page requirements after all LOL

Oh dear … I started reading Dune. I couldn't finish it. It was god awful, really. I refuse to read something just because it's supposed to be "geeky" in some way -eyeroll- If I don't like it, I'm not reading it.
That being said, I tried Robert Jordan, too. I got through five or six books before I just had to stop. My english teacher suggested it because I absolutely adore Terry Goodkind, but I just … I don't know. I saw too many similarities between the two series and just felt like I was reading the same damn thing.
Erm … I haven't watched BSG, Firefly, etc. But that's because I refuse to watch things out of order and want to buy the boxsets, which I can't do until I find a job. Starwars is the same deal. A lot of my "black holes" are due to this obsession, actually :P
Same here. There are many many shows and many books I'd like to read.. it's just having the money and the time for it!

I don't like Asimov. At all. Getting through Foundation was excruciating. Also, I've never read Arthur C. Clarke, or Jordan. or George RR Martin.
I've never watched any of BSG, Farscape, or the Stargate TV shows, and only one or two episodes of Dr. Who or Babylon 5.
I've done very little RPG (none since college), I've never LARPed, and didn't attend my first convention until I was 29.
In my defense, I founded and/or edit multiple SFF zines; I write SFF (and wrote over half a million words of fanfic); I played Magic: The Gathering for over a decade, and even won a few tournaments; and when I was less than a year old my mom took me to see Star Wars in the theater (where I apparently freaked out during the trash compactor scene). I remember seeing The Princess Bride in theaters too.

I'm not going to SDCC.

My whole life is ridden with geek black holes, but that's mostly because I multi-classed into "Playa". ;)
- The only Star Wars movie I enjoyed was Star Wars I, and that's mostly due to the awesome duel at the end. Still hatin' Jar-Jar, though.
- I have never read a single book on the D&D recommended list, except the Hobbit and LotR. And I REEEEEALLY hated LotR in book form, and will probably never watch the movies again, except maybe RotK.
- I've never watch a single ep of Babylon 5, Dr. Who, Farscape… I watched the first few eps of the new BSG but I've had people say that the end was so disappointing that I shouldn't bother. I miss Star Trek TNG and DS9. I'm a big Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis geek, though. SG:U is appreciated for what it's trying to do, but it's the black sheep of the SGs for me (much like Voyager was for Star Trek).

You multi-classed in being a flat piece of desert that is sometimes covered by an endorheic lake? How does one even do that?
playa – beach? lol. nice one Kaja :P
I am Completely immersed into Tolkein's "Middle Earth". I have watched all the movies, learned some of the elven language and culture, but have NOT read ANY of the books. o.O

I've never been able to complete "The Fellowship of the Ring" novel, much less of the other books.
"Dune" was okay… but the rest made me want to cry.
I find Jordan and Martin boring as well.
However, I am on my third go around of the "Night Watch" series.
I also read Hubbard's Mission Earth series and I liked it. (that was before I learned about Scientology).

I've never read any of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (though I have read The Hobbit). I've only recently started reading the Harry Potter books. I've been attending AmberCons even though I've only read 2 1/2 Zelazny books. And despite my boyfriend having four full shelves of graphic novels, I've read about four series, and have read almost NO super hero comics.

I haven't seen all the Star Wars movies, some I saw but was too young at the time to really remember now. I haven't read anything by Jordan, and when I tried to read "The Hobbit" I was bored to sleep.
I also haven't seen any of Firefly, but it's on my instant queue and I hope to be rectifying that shortly.

PAXEast is the only con I've ever been attended. I wasn't into superhero comics when I was a kid (GIJoe and Transformers, sure. But I got my Superhero fix from cartoons and my best friend that told me all about the superhero comics). I don't work in IT. I have very few toys. I refuse to wear my Star Wars polo shirt to work after some jackhole made fun of it (he doesn't work there anymore, I still do).

I've never been to a con (not sure what I'd do when I got there, not being into comics), never played D&D, never watched BSG, never watched Dr. Who, I think The Holy Grail is pretty funny, but I'm not as big into Monty Python as most of my friends. I suppose I'm more of a tech and robotics geek. Although I have collected many pointless hobbies, rubik's cubes, juggling, etc.

After two attempts, I have yet to make it all the way through The Lord of the Rings. The furthest I've gotten was to the end of T2T. While I love The Hobbit, I find Tolkien's style inTLoTR to be far too dry and meandering.
I couldn't make it more than 30 pages into Dune.
Also, I can no longer tolerate Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I'd say the reasoning behind #2 actually gives you MORE geek cred :)

I've never played a D&D game in my life and wouldn't know where to begin.
I don't even know who Jonathan Coulton is.
I've only just started to watch Firefly and I really don't get what the fuss is about. If had gone to more than one season I'd probably give up on it.
Maybe I'm not really a geek?

Warhyammer is a tad above me with all the firgures and armies n stuff, but i liked it as a tabletop :)
i prefer to LIVE LARP tho :s
so sue me if im not geek leet but im happy :)

I've never seen BSG.
I want to watch it (mostly so I can increase my geek cred) but I really dislike space shows (also never watched Star Trek). Whenever I sit down to start BSG, I just end up watching Firefly again because I love it so much.
And before you comment, I like the 'western' part of Firefly, so am willing to overlook the 'space' bit (eye candy and fantastically witty dialogue help too).

My gap is that final series of star trek with Scott Bakula. The craving for fresh star trek is almost strong enough to make me watch it but I would have to get every episode right from the beginning and it seems a little too much expense for a show that I am a little unsure of. It is also possible there may be some episodes of voyager I haven't seen, I actually turned the tv on today half way through one I had never seen. Deeply surprised i was.

my fave star wars is *sit down for this* episode 3. and the only series of star trek ive seen is DS9. *shock! horror!*
i have never played a MMORPG. ever. computers confuse me. as does any form of maths. i also only started watching star trek after the latest movie and only then because chris pine is tres tres good looking. i am planning on reading hitchikers soon (because of the film) and only read harry potter after the second film. i hated the cover. oddly enough i hate most film versions of books.
good lord i shouldent even have a geek licence. is the fact im planning in becoming an astrophycist good enough? and please ignore my spelling. its shit, i know.

I NEVER read comic books and consider them to be inferior to real literature.
In the past i have been told that this is what makes me a techie and nerd more than a geek.

I'm not a fan of on-line gaming. Yeah yeah, but I'm just not that good, and getting my @$$ handed to me by 12 year olds ain't my idea of a good time. :)

I think it's funny that someone who NEVER reads comic books cares to comment as to how inferior they are to "real" literature. You don't like them, fine, but you're opinion has no weight until you have widely sampled and dissected the best that the medium has to offer.
I've never seen Dr. Who.
I DESPISE the Lord of the Rings movies because I feel they miss what's really important and completely misinterpret my favorite characters.

I don't particularly like ANY science/fantasy fiction.
I'm much more into regular stuff that have a pop culture geeky edge.
I don't play games in general, much less role-playing ones.
I much prefer 'real' geeky stuff, like gadgets/technology/the internet/space and stuff like that..that still means I'm a geek, right?
As AskANinja said, "Whether you think you're alive or you think you're dead, YOU'RE RIGHT!"
Same rule applies, I presume.

I've never watched star trek
I’ve never watched star trek
I've yet to read the latest book in the WoT.
I think the Star Gate series is second rate, mass market crap.

Forgive me geeks, for I have sinned.
-I'm not much of a reader. I never even got into comic books or fan fiction. That said, Dune and Harry Potter are favorites.
-I've only played D&D once, and it just didn't do it for me (yet for some reason I found LARPing more fun the two times I've done it).
-I don't play World of Warcraft or many other video games for that matter.
-I've never seen BSG, Firefly, and have only started watching Dr. Who.
-I've never played Magic or any other card games.
-I've never been to a convention.
-Now that MST3K is gone I don't enjoy anything on the Sci-Fi channel (or SyFy or whatever it's called now).
Glad to see I'm not alone.

I have never had a Red Bull energy drink. Honestly, I'm not a fan of BAWLS either, unless it is Root Beer Flavor, and even then I would rather just have Root Beer.
Until very recently, I had never seen "Wrath of Kahn." Geek hole filled. =)
I have never finished a Star Wars novel. Nor have I read any of the Dune books, or anything by Isaac Asimov.

I haven't read Robert Jordan. I tried, but I found it so mind-numbingly boring that I read a sociology textbook instead. Same for the original Dune books. I own 'em all, but just can't read more than 10 pages without dozing off.
I've never been to SDCC or DragonCon & I probably never will.
I don't watch anime. Not that I wouldn't like to, I just don't know where to start & no-one I've asked can be bothered to tell me.
I don't play World of Warcraft or any other online MMORPGs Hell, I don't even play Warhammer, and I haven't played D&D in 20-some years, & GURPS not for over 10 years.
Most of my geek gear (even the LEGO) has spent the last 10+ years in boxes in storage bcause there's no room for it in my life these days.
I find that a good anime to start with is called The Gokusen. It's short, funny, and you don't have to know about a lot of animes to get the jokes like some. If you are a fan of girly stuff, don't start with Clamp. You'll have to read everything by them to get all the information–and even then you miss stuff.
Hope I helped.
Full Metal Alchemist and Death Note are great entertainment whether you like anime or not. Those anime can are great compared to all mediums of story telling.

I'm afraid I have a few confessione, some wholes that I'm NOT interested in filling at all, and others I might fill in the near future:
-I absolutely HATE LOTR…books and movies….I watched the three movies though…I find the whole deal extremely BORING..
- Other than the latest J.J. Abrams movie, I find the whole Star Trek culture extremely boring and I really really can't see what all the fuss is about..(I admit I'm way more of a Warsy…)
-Eventhough I'm a die-hard Whedon fan, I haven't seen Firefly :( ….
- I loved the first Matrix movie…and HATED the other two…
- I've become a victim of the whole Twilight-Jacob-Taylor Lautner-Awesome Hot Body commercial angle…though I feel the movie, books and story of the Twilight saga in general is an insult to my intelligence and the vampire folklore… I agree with everyone: VAMPIRES DON'T SPARKLE!!!!!!!!
- I don't read geeky literature..I usually prefer waiting for the movies or series to come out :s
MMM… I think that's all I can remember for now…

I have never read LOTR or The Hobbit or Narnia or…I just can't get into them. I will admit that I just cannot get into fantasy or sci-fi. The graphic novels I own are Sin City, The Wizard of Oz and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. I loved Harry Potter, though.
*snorts* Vampires Don't Sparkle. Back in my day (uh oh, this makes me sound old) vampires were killing machines, there was no homoeroticism!!
I consider myself more of a nature geek.
I'm also not a video game player, the only game I really play is scrabble and cribbage.

I don't–and never have–owned a video game controller. I don't tend to play video games, even on the computer. I prefer text based mmorpgs.
I've never read LOTR, even though I love the Hobbit. Asimov puts me to sleep. The only Heinlein book I like is Starship Troopers. I can't stand Anne Rice's books. But I just so happen to love Dune, well, the first three books. It's the worms.
Never seen Blade Runner, most of Star Wars, Tron, and all of the Fifth Element. I don't watch Battleship Galactica, Fringe, Lost, and the Stargates after SG-1. Angel and his show makes my skin crawl.
I prefer science and anime really…that might be why.

-Fall asleep whenever I try to watch Bladerunner.
-I can't watch The Matrix trilogy, nor the Lord of the Rings trilogy, ever again due to how very badly the third movie in both seemed to me.
-Any George Lucas written Star Wars stuff is dead to me now. Long live Bioware Star Wars games though.
-I hate consoles and the fact that too many seemingly good games get released solely on a given console system. Although that actually might make me more of geek when I think about it..

-I don't watch many movies, AT ALL. Even the geeky ones.
-I don't read American comics. Not that I don't want to or have anything against them, I just don't know where to start or what I'd like. I think superheros are a bit overdone, though I'd be willing to give the genre a shot if I saw something that interested me. I do read manga though.
-I don't play D&D or table tops.
-I have not played FF7. I will though. Eventually…
-I dislike MMOs, including WoW.
I'm more of a computer/programmer/gaming/anime geek I guess. I love making websites and I want to major in software programming. I'm an avid linux user… and I loves me the console RPGs. Xenosaga<3 If that game is not geeky love, please tell me what is.

I have never played Magic since I was shown how in grad school, but since it was by the computer game company I worked for, I'm hoping I'm still geeky enough.

Currently filling a black hole – I am reading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series and it is *well* worth the effort. I started end of march and currently (end of july) at book 7.
I've never seen all the Star Wars movies. I've seen bits of some of them, but they are poorly written garbage from what I've seen. Altho I know enough of them to be able to colloquialize to some degree with a Star Wars fan.
I've never seen even a minute of Firefly and I hate Dr. Who.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN STAR WARS. OH GOD THE TRUTH HURTS.
I….Never actually watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer
and also, I’ve never made it past the first Harry Potter movie, i mean, chamber of secrets just kept putting me to sleep! (literally, three times i tried, and three times i failed)
Maybe i’ll give it another shot now that i’m older and such, but yeah. feels GREAT getting that off my chest xD

You should watch Buffy!
I'm currently watching it because my friends forced me, but it's really wonderful. It's intense and funny, with lots of action but still people time. It's wonderful.
Never seen any Indiana Jones
Ive never read lord of the rings
never read dune
I FUCKING HATE William Shatner. With the white-hot fury of a thousand suns.
I consider myself a Star Trek TOS geek, strictly… Although I love technology and can find my way around the inside of a computer, and I've seen Blade Runner. :)
I also love the HP series and LotR, the movies of course as I only read star trek books ;)…
I've only seen one ep of Firefly, and barely a seasons worth of Dr. Who… >.>
This is a hard confession for me… but I have never finished Portal and I have never even touched Portal 2. I don't play WoW and I don't understand how to properly set up a system network. v_v
I've never read or seen Harry Potter. (I'm ok with this. You can't embrace EVERY aspect of geek culture.)
I've seen every episode of Firefly many times, but never Serenity.
Never seen a single episode of Buffy.
I've seen Star Wars but *ducks* but prefer Star Trek. Also, TNG FTW.
I read very little science fiction because I prefer magical realism to high fantasy and alternate history to far-flung non-human drama. One could argue that alt-history is sci-fi, though, so who knows.
Comics! I've never been into them. Every time we sit down for DnD (or whatever), part of our pop-culture tangents invariably drift into whatever's happening in the X-Men Universe, or the new Superman-dates-Batman adventure or whatever. I just never got involved, and honestly most superheroes bore the bejesus out of me. I don't even like most of the movies (though the new Batmans were badass)
I have never played an RPG, or Portal(but I know the jokes and the premise), or… any video games really except Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Lego Star Wars/ Harry Potter.
I've never read Robert Jordan
I've never played D&D, though I wish
I don't like Battlestar Galactica
I'm not really into technology
I'm 14, so I don't really understand older-nerd jokes. Though I did see the orig. Tron
I'm more of an artist then a scholar, although I love school. Science and Math in particular.
I despise most animes/mangas.
I couldn't read Anne Rice
I love Disneyland more than conventions
My biggest black hole would be that I've never played Dungeons and Dragons >.>
I have a lot of black holes, but for now I'll just share my two most shameful:
-I have never seen Return of the Jedi, nor any of Episodes I-III (also, I have to say I really didn't like A New Hope).
-I have never sat through a whole episode of Star Trek, regardless of generation.
Also to make matters worse regarding the first point – I own RotJ on DVD, I just haven't been bothered to watch it!
I think the Dresden Files are awful (and I read through book 6, so it's not like I didn't try!), I hated Sword of Truth, and most damning of all — I can't stand Family Guy. I haven't read any Lovecraft because at some point I decided that nothing ever happened except people went gibberingly, horrifyingly mad. I've also never played World of Warcraft.
I could not get past the 2nd chapter of Dune series. The books are too depressing.
I found Robert Jordan just as boring, though it is likely that is because I have moved away from fantasy to purely SciFi over the years, at least for books.
I am not interested in most horror, so I have no interest in Chuthulu. That said, I like old school horror, like Lon Chaney & Bela Lugosi. The old Frankenstein, Wolfman, & Dracula movies. That is why I liked Van Helsing.
I have only been to one con & I don't remember it's name. It was back in '89 near LAX. I went because I was stationed in San Diego and was close. Had many intentions to go to others, but life sucks that way.
All of the above, PLUS, I haven't seen all of the Star Wars movies, have never played Dungeons and Dragons (not for lack of trying, though) and I SUCK at math…
Oh god i'm so embarrased
I'm perfect and have no Black Holes.
Well, does it matter? I've seen three talks at a "geekish" kindo of event. The first one was about comics, the second one about origami. It turned out that the origami talk was much more nerdy than the one on comics.
Discworld anyone?
Hitchhiker's Guide…well, I didn't find it all that funny. And it certainly didn't appeal to me enough to read any of the other ones. So yeah, I know what the whole towel is, the whole babel fish reference and the meaning of life is 42. I just. Don't. Care.
As for Robert Jordan. Yeah…you probably would have some issues with it. I know I do. Like its the same freaking story in every book. I'm liking the last three though, but then again, they weren't really written by Robert Jordan.
As for Bladerunner. I saw that a loooooong time ago. And it was, well, meh. I wasn't really a geek then though. I used to make fun of my brother being a dungeon master, got him a crown royal bag for his dice, and made him a cape. And snickered with my friends about it in the next room. So most of my "getting" D&D is because we had to listen to long dissertations about it at the dinner table.
Never read the hitchhikers guide or the wheel of time stuff, i just don't read that much … and i will never watch or read the twilight serious unless it's for a girl … lol
My Blackhole is I am not a Video Game Geek. I don't own a Wii, XBox, PS3, DS, or even an iPod.
It's not that I don't like games, I am hip on the l33t speak, and I have pwnd an few at HALO online, I just don't own them, but have pleanty of friends that do, so I know the jokes. I have tons of people tall me I should Play . . . (inset latest game). but I don't.
Anything else- I am okay with.
Don't feel bad, my father read Robert Jordan, in his 50's and we still have the books, plenty of tiem for that. He liked Pierce Anthony and Anne McCaffrey too. Give those a shot.
Not into Harry Potter, but I have read and seen some of the movies.
Twilight= Bad.
Towel at the ready for RPG night!
MTFBWYA
I hate Star Wars and can barely keep up with Star Trek.
Apart from that… TCG and tabletop RPGs. I've never played either, but! I do plan to start with Magic: The Gathering sometime soon.
I have never seen anything from the original Star Trek series– not the original seasons, nor the animated series, nor any of the movies.
I have only seen one episode of Firefly. For similar reasons to yourself, actually: I want to save them for a time in my life when I could use a boost (followed by the heartbreak of remembering the boost will be one season worth of short-lived).
Oh, man, there are too many…

lets see.
All necessary reading: check, Although I refuse to read Ann Rand on principle.
All necessary TV shows: Check, Although I deny publicly ever watching Pokemon, Digimon, Power Rangers, Transformers squeals (ie not the ones from the 80s), Yu-gi-oh!, and Sailor Moon.
Movies: Check and I will freely admit to them all.
Computers: I had a Sinclare instead of a T64. I never played Doom, Sorry I was playing Table top back then.
So early FPS is my black-hole.
