Inuvik Gets Artificial Sun

----------------

Ok, this is super awesome. Since people in Inuvik, Canada, are permanently enshrouded in darkness during winter, Tropicana (the juice company) decided to bring sunshine into their lives by installing 100,000 lumens worth of lights into a large helium balloon, raising the whole thing into the sky. Check it out:

    • It's an Airstar 40K balloon. They're generally used for film work where there's nothing to rig with outdoors, or in locations where you don't want to damage any surfaces (museums, older theatres, etc.). If you pause the video around 0:17, you can see them installing the 8x5KW (40,000W) tungsten bulbs. Not exactly a low-power fixture, but it's pretty standard to have a few 20KW tungsten or 18KW HMI fixtures in zoom-booms to do an overhead wash of the scene or mimic moonlight and keep them out of the shot.

  1. Meanwhile, the wildlife in the area are disturbed by this unnatural sunlight during their normally dark winter cycle and start to run amok and kill the locals.

Good job humans, thinking we can change nature without having any repercussions. I hope the OJ was good.
