My glasses are really very weak by most standards, and I can get around just fine without them, but I still really miss them if they're off because I'm missing out on the world. Maybe that's where the link to geekiness comes from?

one thing I was told when I got my first pair of glasses was that I fitted into the category of people who'd complain about their vision even if it was 20/20, because they (we) always want to be able to see more and further. When I got my glasses, my mother told me it was due to me watching my TV upside down (I used to do that XD) Now, my eye sight has only gotten worse. This is probably because I use the computer pretty much all day long :P

Great article!

When I got my glasses, my mother told me it was due to me watching my TV upside down (I used to do that XD) Now, my eye sight has only gotten worse. Could it be that the percentage of bad eyesight is stable, but that non-geeks just happen to be less likely to seek out vision correction because they read less? Compound that with the idea that non-geeks are more likely to value appearances and are therefore more likely to use contact lenses? Even if those differences are outdated, the stereotype will persist.

I think y'all are looking from the wrong direction. She was saying that the way the eye works is that to look long distances the muscles in the eye pull tighter and relax for looking short distances. As such geeky types tend to spend a long time in front of a computer or in a book and so these muscles spend more time relaxed and as such get weaker. This was just one idea not taking into consideration genetics (both my parents wear glasses and so do I). Just another point to take into consideration.

I was discussing this the other day with my girlfriend.
