I'm assuming the president's comment was hyperbole.

I don't know about the temperament of groundhogs, but the meat of PETA's complaint is that groundhogs don't like large crowds of humans or all the bright, flashing lights. They may have a legitimate claim in that regard.

Personally, I think this whole Punxsutawney Phil thing is awesome, thanks to Bill Murray. According to lore, Phil is immortal. In actuality, groundhogs live longer in captivity than out of it, so they're extending his life AND he only works one day a year. Sounds like a pretty sweet gig to me.
