What the hell would I need this thing for anyway,

No multitasking, and no USB, this thing is one hell of a setback.

I don't see anyone but those Steve Job worshipers buy one.

I certainly wouldn't mind playing with one, but feel no desire to purchase in the years to come.

While Jobs mentioned how the netbook didn't do anything better than a laptop, at least it fulfilled a purpose. People wanted something SMALLER and LIGHTER than a full laptop for ultra-portability, and that's what they got. I don't remember the market saying they need a giant iPod Touch.

As I mention in a post on my blog, the big surprise on this announcement was the price. Other than that, the Dell Axim PDA I bought in 2004 could do most everything the iPad does, and it had a swappable battery!

A netbook that I can easily manage the software on; keep open and running on my desk all day; an e-book reader that I can read all day and keep a library of reference manuals or textbooks on; a note-taking device for meetings, seminars, and classes; and all of the info is synced with my desktop and my iPhone? 3G wireless if you want it, when you want it, at a great pay-as-you-go price? A gazillion apps, and counting? What's not to like?

This will replace a large fraction of the laptops out there.

Sure, I can offer lots of suggestions for how to make it better. But, as it stands, this device solves many of the toughest problems with today's netbooks and laptops. The iPad is my next computer purchase.

if the second generation have a replacable battery, USB to plug in my video collection, music and all my ebooks and a mic-jack then we can talk about it. Otherwise it will be an oversized iphone with lousy screen resolutions, no keyboard (com on: you CAN'T really work with tha toy) and if you try to make a phonecall in your car without a bluetooth headset … think of the laughter from the car near you. Absolutly No-Go.

BUT apple shows how marketing works: even if 2% of the readers and writers here will buy such apple thingy even in one or two years … mision accomplished!

I think this is a lot like the iPod announcement and sort of like the iPhone announcement. Essentially this is a great idea but I think people don't "realize they need it" yet. Just like MP3 players really didn't catch on until Jobs got into the game.

For me, I think I'm also going to wait until second gen (or at least till this gets more stable and built out) because of A) price erosion and B) I live in a box…no need for yet ANOTHER computer :P

Would be nice to bring for a presentation at another school or a conference though :)

I'm intrigued, but..I have practical questions… Mostly that stem from it's higher portability- Like: how do you hold on to it? If I drop it even lightly will it break? How do I sew a 10 in wide pocket into my shirt to hold it?
