Comments on: The Greatest Adventure: Some Considerations in Casting Bilbo Baggins

yet again. like everyone else i would hate a "foreign" actor for the part of bilbo, for the english mannerisms that bilbo just has in abundance. BUT, one suprising actor that came to mind was… (and you will be suprised), Johnny Depp, he may have chiseled looks but the guy is a flawless actor, maybe his appearance could be changed to fit the character of bilbo. but johny depp is just my Wild card. i have a few more suggestions:

Eddie Izzard: a comedian, but also very serious actor and can pull it off too, he also has that cheeky middle aged face that i kind of got from bilbo when i read the book.

Colin Firth: charming, has a hobbity look about him the more i stare at his face lol, a good actor. but his accent for his typical rom-coms and period dramas would have to be changed.

Ewen Mcgregor: another excellent actor, scottish like a previous suggestion with james mcavoy. and would be able to pull it off me thinks, also. i dont think he is a very tall man ? :D

David Morrissey: has a VERY hobbit-like look about him, and after seeing him in a "doctor who" a year ago i think it was, i was impressed by his enthusiasm, didn't expect that character to jump out at me, i wonder if he will mould himself into bilbo, like he did The Doctor ;)

Finally

David Threlfall: From the english series Shameless. not known at all in the hollywood circuit, but PJ hasn't always gone for high profile actors :D, he pulled off the drunk+family man part in shameless (well almost), and had a few adventures of his own in that too. he has a charm to him, a lovable rogue of sorts. would be interesting to see what he would do.

Well, theres my 2 cents, er.. i mean pence :P. i look forward to any replies to my suggestions :)

I think the worst thing they could do would be to cast Maguire as Bilbo. I'm a huge LOTR fan and I don't think I would watch The Hobbit of Maguire was in it. I can't stand him and he doesn't fit the description of Bilbo at all. I totally agree with some of the other commentors. He has to have a British accent and be "roundish". They better get it right or they will have a lot of unhappy people…

Please, please, please don't make Spiderman Bilbo. That'd be so horrible.

I agree that whoever does eventually plays Bilbo should be just the right mix of British, charming, and whiny to make him perfect. I don't know who they should get to play him, just that he can't be too young. Whenever I read the Hobbit, I always think of Bilbo as an older man, but that might be because I still a teenager.

All I know is that they need to pick someone appropriately roundish, especially in the face. In the LotR movies, Sam and Bilbo were just right, but Frodo, Merry, and Pippin, were too slender in my opinion.

I think they may have a much harder time casting dwarves.

I doubt many would want to go through the agonising pain John Rhys-Davies had to endure with his make up, while playing Gimli.

No, no, no. The man for the job is, without a doubt, Martin Freeman. He's the guy who played Tim in the British version of the Office. Do a google images search for him and tell me that doesn't look like Bilbo.
