So, is there a point to having a LinkedIn? I have one and all, but I haven’t been there in at least three months.

My wife and I were one of the first to join.
I’ve got somebody spamming me that I though knew my wife. I’ve since blown him off. My wife uses it to connect with old coworkers.

Nowadays, I make sure to link my CV or cover letter to LinkedIn when appropriate – for jobs with recommendations. The networking aspect is interesting, but I think the strength of having recommendations should be leveraged better when applying for jobs.

I didn’t see the value until I lost my job 2 months ago. As I apply for jobs, I’m able to search LinkedIn to see if any of my contacts knows someone at the company I’m interested in. This can be all I need to get my resume an extra look. Invaluable.
I have a great job now. _They_ found _me_ on LinkedIn. After I beefed up my cv etc.

As a hiring manager, I use LinkedIn quite a bit. Personally, I find checking someone’s references a complete waste of time (who can’t find three people to say something nice about them), but I can almost always find someone I know who knows the person or knows someone who knows them. I’ve both decided to hire and to not hire someone based on finding someone I knew who could tell me about a potential employee.
