Google the main one. After this, for a desktop, just choose the right distro and enjoy a stability that is better than the mac (don't even consider windows), A Customizability that you never dreamed of before seeing it, and a user-friendliness that you cannot compare with any other OS since you can customize it as you wish.

Hem, man, I think you should know that Linux is SO stable that all (for what I know) of the world's biggest servers are running Linux. That is the best about linux: you can have it for free and everywhere even on a ppc architecture that apple doesn't support since quite a while. Personnaly, I never looked back to windows and even my family (father, two sisters and brother) are now using ubuntu on a daily basis and nobody is never complaining. Linux is VERY user friendly because it took me about two weeks to get use to the Ubuntu enough to use it a lot more than I had ever used my computer under windows. Customisation is so easy that you can even have three version of your desktop on the same OS, I presently have both GNOME and KDE running graphically ubuntu and my girlfriend (huge MacOs fan, as a girl may be) prefers KDE because it is more beautiful and me GNOME since he is the most ergonomic and user friendly desktop I know. Stability, you can't even compare with windows, as a beginner on linux, I made HUGE mistakes like killing an important operation in a terminal or worse (terminal wich is a lot easier to use that any windows user would think because the windows terminal is both crappy and a lot to much hidden by the windows makers) and the hardest thing I had to do to continue using my machine is a 30 seconds reboot. Ah, just laughing a few seconds, I compared the boot speed under Xubuntu with my old 1.5 ghz and under Windows XP (a clean installation) with a I7 and my PowerBook has been quicker XD So, this comment is more like a book but anyways, I had a bit of time to loose! Just a last word, with ubuntu, when you don't know what to do, you don't have paying support available but a very well organised forum with thousands of people that will answer quickly, often in 10-15 minutes, wich is shorter than waiting on the phone with many companies ;)

I was a Windows user and I did'nt really liked making a "true" use of my computer, in october I moved under Ubuntu and now I got a PowerBook g4 running under Xubuntu (a variant) wich is a lot more user friendly and customizable than the old OSX that was coming with this old computer. For a true novice Ubuntu is much friendlier than Windows, but less friendly for someone used to the Windows way of doing things. The hardest part about Linux isn't he OS, but getting used to how it's different from Winows. For example, software installation is generally much easier under Ubuntu than Win 7. I use all 3 OS's regularly, but Linux is my fave: easy, customizable, stable, fast, powerful.

Agreed.
