Are Drinking Bird Toys Perpetual Motion Devices?

July 21, 2009 by Geeks are Sexy | 2 comments

In case you’ve never seen one, a drinking bird is a toy that mimics the motion of a bird drinking from a glass of water. What makes this device so fantastic is that even though it has no apparent power source, it never stops moving, making people incorrectly think that somehow, it is a perpetual motion device.

But geek people know the truth behind it: magic. or just a thermodynamic machine designed to amuse us with simple minds. you decide.

I had one of these as a kid. O.k., it’s not perpetual motion, but pretty darn close (and zero emmissions!) I have to wonder, how big of a drinking bird would be necessary to drive a turbine powerful enough to power a single average American home? And what would it cost, taking into account economies of scale, to make ten million of these?
