Steel Life: A 3D Visual Masterpiece

June 30, 2009 by Geeks are Sexy | 5 comments

Produced by Mathieu Gérard as his master thesis graduation film, Steel Life is all about beautiful music and stunning 3D imagery.

Steel Life is an experimental student short film based on aesthetics of visual effects. It was produced at university Paris 8 for my master thesis graduation in Arts et Technologie de l’image. My goal was to achieve an onirical and aesthetic treatment of visual effects through CG art.

Its certainly stunning and at some points the combination of music and visual effects remind of me scenes i have seen in either Anime, CGI from games like Final Fantasy and a few movies…

For me as fine arts student this short movie is extremely appealing to my eyes and aesthetic value, i love the water like metal and the “sun” exploding.

Its interesting he was able to isolate certain aesthetically appealing effects that are appreciated by everyone that has a visual focus in art…but its only a “pretty picture” in my opinion…i know it was his intention though :P

Yeah, the goal was precisely just that, and he does it admirably well. After all, he’s not selling the video as a story, but more as a demonstration of his technical and artistic skills.

There are a few short clips that seem very original tho, the very fast bursting open metal flower, the slower opening and closing flower, the “metallic” waves at the begin slowing down suddenly and having what appears to be a second layer on it that moves differently…

the others can almost be inserted in various games and movies >.<

“It was produced at university Partis 8″

It’s “Paris” not “Partis”.

Great movie.

Beautiful….stimulates the mind and senses…moves me..but does not “feed me”…or does it.

Compared to a PhD in science….
