I like what was said on Kyle Lacy's blog... nothing can stay "free" forever. We have to figure out how a service is going to be viable, whether it's charitable donations (which a lot of programmers shamelessly request on their free-script download pages) or through advertising. Here's a litmus test: if Twitter needed dough to keep the service alive for your geeky desires... would you pay them for it? If the answer's no, then how can you expect them to disallow advertising? Everyone's gotta eat. There isn't a single product out there that's still geeky. Everything's turned into cash-making crap, even something as geeky as the whole concept of Twitter and Digg (and other such sites).
