This kind of systems have been around for many years and a lot of them are already used very effectively to do virtual prototyping, research, training, phobia treatment etc.

To be correct, it is not polarized 3D glasses, but stereoscopic active lightweight shutter glasses. This kind of technology is starting to popup in PC games, the round connector at the back of graphics card is to connect the emmittor that talks to the shutter glasses.

UC Davis (and others) have been doing this for years. Check out the KeckCAVES videos. Disclosure: I help support UCD research. I've used the Quake3 simulator and it is crazy fun.
