This is nothing new… it has been done for the last 5-6 years. They might of changed the formula for foam, but it is the same result.

The real problem isn't the shipping weight on this type of packing material, its the cost per package that kills you. Its an A/B(Poly/ISO) chemical mixture that expands very quickly, it gets a little warm but when I was packing computers with it we were paying about 6.20 a box to protect the computer. In addition to the box. Not really cost effective against paper packing or peanuts, but if it positively cant be jostled its ok ;)

Yeah, we use something similar for our international shipments of large stainless steel block valves. It's been around for about 12 years at least.

I used to work for a medical device manufacturing company that used a similar packaging technology for years. It's a two part chemical mixture – water and some nasty smelling, yellow liquid. The two are mixed and sprayed into a pink plastic like what's shown in the video. It dries rapidly and holds parts for shipping very firmly. There is very little added weight.

Is this really a new technology? I have received many packages over the years in this type of foam insulation padding that conformed to the product with the same plastic liner. It is really cool, but it adds considerable weight to the packaging, therefore increasing the cost of shipping. I would only recommend it for truly sensitive items.
