The Best Commercial EVER [Very NSFW]

December 11, 2008 by Geeks are Sexy | 57 comments

First, let me start by saying this: This is a Danish commercial for a Siemens washing machine. Second, it is very, very NSFW and contains nudity, so if you’re at work right now, watch it tonight when you’re back home. I won’t spoil the surprise, but it’s worth the return trip!

Edit: With more than 10,000 views, we have received 2 complaints about this video being inappropriate for [GAS]. Should we refrain from posting this kind of content on the blog from now on? Please let us know in the comments section. Your opinion matters to us. Please note that several tech sites posted this, including Techcrunch.

They Are sellling a Siemens Washing mashine. 4999,- Danish Kroner (about 800 $) at Fleggaard – A Border shop between Germany and Denmark.

The joke is about crosing the line – which is the border between Germany and Denmark – and in this case the line of what you can show on TV.

I’m not offended by this (though being female most people may think I should be), but I do agree that it doesn’t belong on this site. A washing machine doesn’t really count as technology news to me, especially on a site titled “Geeks are Sexy”, as there is nothing geeky about this. Also, though I haven’t been following this site for too long, it’s been long enough for me not able to recall anything as “risque” (for lack of a better word) as this video being shown on the site.

On the other hand, I’m assuming you (kiltak) are a guy and thus don’t see anything wrong with this at all ;)

I found this ad to be funny and yes, I’m a girl. I don’t see any reason for not posting NSFW material because the title of the post was very explicit about it. Nobody’s forcing you to watch it. You can watch it or not.

And it’s geeky because many people relate Ride of the Valkyries with Apocalypse Now

Exactly! If people complain about the ad, after reading the warnings… IN BOLD then it is them who have a serious problem and NOT the content of the post.

Post on!!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with posting this ad on your site. Those offended by it should just piss off — the title said NSFW, and if you aren’t geek enough to know what that means, then you have no business here.

Keep posting, and remember:

I don’t have a problem with this kind of content, as long as it’s posted with a NSFW warning, which this was.

I’m more offended by the amount of silicone flying through the air than by anything else. None of the ‘portrayed’ women seemed to have any natural curve, is that the hyperreality advertising wants to show us? Yes, it is a funny commercial, no it is not over the edge. Does it belong here?
Hey, it’s your site dude. We are just visitors. If I don’t like one of your articles, I won’t read it. But offended? Grew over being offended by anything as mundane as bare breasts.
I live in the Netherlands. If I were offended by topless women, I could never go to the beach in summer.

D-mon, I’m also from the Netherlands, I don’t think this would even be considered NSFW here depending on where you work ;) I know I just watched it at the office with a co-worker.

Nothing wrong with the post, the NSFW was posted specifically and at the end of the day this is a tech site, even if a washing machine isn’t “high” tech its still tech.

Quote: tech, science, news and social issues for geeks

stop being so frickin fussy, wow theres breasts.

I’m sure you’ve all seen them before and will again (although in some cases people don’t deserve to)

and it come under tech, science, news AND social issues so hows that not appropriate for the site?

I saw it at work along with 3 colleagues with whom I share an office. Two of them are female. They all found it very funny.

The ad showed not much more than what I see at other ads every night on TV.

Maybe it is a cultural thing; US TV has strict codes and so the appearance of nipples comes as a shock.

Us Europeans are used to (semi)nudity, both on TV and on the beaches and also in public places such as saunas and spas; it is harder to offend us with something as trivial as nipples.

Anyway, bring ‘em on — I would love to see similar items.

Well as a commentator points out, that this was in the top 10 worst ads that person has seen.

Well this might be your thought, but have you fully seen what potential this ad got, reduces costs for the advertiser to pay broadcasting fees for television etc, they made a commersial that spreads ( viral video) because of very known fundemental factors; sex sells and in the end which dishwasher will you remember. Hmm that one that is advertised like the other 100 brands or the one with falling naked chicks?

In my opinion this was a brilliant ad.

What? Something sexual on a geek news site?! But, but… geeks don’t like sex! Or sexuality! ;P

If it says “NSFW”… don’t blame the writer if you disagree with the content. Hell, it’s like you watched it KNOWING you’d be offended, and threw a tantrum anyway.

IMHO, viral marketing is VERY geeky, especially if it relates to technology (even ubiquitous tech like washing machines). And I find this ad infinitely hilarious! Well played on their part, I say. :)

No worries here. My god, this is completely tame compared to some of the stuff I peruse at work… often before forwarding them to my boss (or receiving from him in the first place). ;)

I have to disagree that it was the best commercial of all time though. Some pretty girls and fake boobs, but that was about it. This is probably my favorite commercial in the last few years, but then… I recently became a father so it’s humor resonates. Nothing NSFW, but I’m sure it will offend FAR more people than your video Kiltak.

I wasn’t offended at all. However, I don’t think this is appropriate for this particular site. This site is for “tech, science, news and social issues for geeks”. While I appreciate flying naked women as much as the next heterosexual male, this particular video doesn’t fit into the mission of this site.

And the fuss was about what exactly? I don’t see anything offensive, NSFW or outrageous about this. A few dozen parachuting boobies (of which I think the nipple count was about 6) – so what? I think Europeans are so much more open minded about sex. Too many Americans seem to have too many hang ups. Jeez – it’s a wonder they managed to breed.

The only complaint I have is the crybabies that always have to find something to bitch about. Shut up people. You did not have to watch the video and GAS made it very clear that it was nsfw. If you are not mature enough to see a few boobies, you should shut off your computer now and never return to the internet. Then you should call your parents and long for your sheltered childhood.

I’m not clear as to why exactly this is considered appropriate for a blog geared toward a technical audience. The only reason I can come up with is that you think that your entire audience is straight men so of course everyone will enjoy looking at boobs for a few minutes. I’m quite disappointed. Yeah, it’s true that I can just ignore this content, but I’m so tired of seeing little to no representation of women anywhere on tech sites except as it applies to their fake tits. And for some reason it’s okay because all the other tech sites posted it too. This makes me think geeks are creepy, not sexy.

Comment by Kiltak
2008-12-14 09:26:32

Fake tits or not, this is not the point of posting this. The concept is absolutely hilarious, which 95% of commenters of this post, including MANY MANY women, thought. Nothing like that has ever been done.. at least, I never saw anything similar.

Well since I was one of the complainers, I will post what I wrote plus some:

I don’t watch smut. It doesn’t matter if it is statistically one in a thousand or the size of a site. I don’t subscribe to those other blogs. I prefer the smaller blogs, but that was a very very very bad judgment call, and if that kind of objectification is what is appropriate to post with the headline best video ever, then sorry, I as a female am disgusted. It wasn’t just oh this ad is bizarre or funny or whatever. It was a complete horndog vid. I don’t expect a tech blog to host softcore porn. I really think you ought to reconsider leaving that up. For every person that writes you that they are unsubscribing, there are ten others that don’t write.

If it isn’t your habit to post things like that you shouldn’t. You should have trusted your gut, if you have to ask whether it is appropriate, ten people no less, then it isn’t. Seriously. Okay yeah it said some nudity and NSFW. I see that warning on some blog posts. I had a warning on mine similar because one picture possibly showed (only possibly) a fraction of a inch of this one guys crotch area. Okay it said some nudity. I expected okay maybe a flash of a boob shot. That was totally softcore porn and very damaging to young impressionable males and females. Men who expect that women should look like that, and women who think they have to pump their boobs full of silicone to look like that. I bet you one of out of ten sets on those ladies were real.

What the heck did that have to do with tech. Nothing.
*****

Also if I did not misunderstand something from prior communications with the blog owner, the author is a minor. IF I remember correctly on that point (and I confess I might be wrong), does his parents approve or even know?

Of course I could have chosen not to watch it. I didn’t expect it to be that bad, but I would have watched it anyways, because I did (I no longer do) subscribe to this blog. That means my clicks and views help support ad revenue. I am not going to support a site that plays smut, and I don’t know if it is smut until I see it.

I only posted since the blog owner decided to make it a public matter which I think is also in poor taste. I did not write to her in order to be made in a statistic or a poll. I assumed it would be private. The fact is that most people don’t bother to write. If two did, twenty didn’t. I wouldn’t have written if I didn’t have prior very genial conversations with the blog owner before.

I have unsubscribed, and if you guys think it is fine to post smut, and potentially by an underaged person, great for you.

I will not be back for any abuse, so fire away.

I forgot to add one thing. Why did I come back? Because I formally enjoyed this blog, and I wanted to see if it was removed for then I would have resubscribed, and then I saw that my complaint was being used for more fodder. Two very bad judgment calls.

Bye.

Your complaint was used to verify if [GAS] readers were thinking the same thing.. and they did not… in fact, 95% of them enjoyed it, including many girls.

Makes me think of Monty Python–I think it was the opening scene from The Meaning of Life. Anyway, anything ridiculous paired with Wagner is always good for a laugh. Somehow those thundering tones announcing a battalion of bare-breasted beauties is hilarious.

I suppose it is NSFW, but I don’t see the harm in it as long as you label it so.

It occurs to me that whoever wrote this probably owes Douglas Adams’ estate some royalties. He has a scene like this in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe. (the book), only his parachutists are completely nude. “We are not proud,” the Magrathean advertiser announces. I suppose Siemens can say the same.
