London to get electric taxi cabs in 2009

In a move that won’t endear him to the oil companies, London Mayor Boris Johnson will probably give the go-ahead for London’s famous black taxis to be replaced with new electric ones.   The first electric taxi cabs are expected to be seen on London’s streets in “early 2009″.

The top speed is said to be 50mph and one battery charge is apparently enough for 100 miles.

As I said, the oil companies will be cursing from the lost revenue that they will suffer but I’m sure the environmental groups will be celebrating if Boris finally signs off on this.   London sure has a serious pollution problem (just like all cities) and replacing all the taxi cabs with electric alternatives will certainly go some way to improving the situation.

  1. Good move! As long as they remain black and keep their quaint old form…
