That’s how my guy did it, too. At the 2003 WorldCon in Toronto when George R.R. Martin was a guest of honor, Tom had George sign a copy of GRRM: A RRetrospective and inscribe the proposal. Later at the Brotherhood Without Banners suite party, with George in attendance, Tom presented it to me.

Sadly, the engagement ended before marriage. But we’re still friends, and I’ll never stop thinking he’s completely awesome for proposing like that. It was so non-traditional and tailored to our personalities and relationship.

Celine, I would conclude that most of the proposals in this article were not true public proposals; they weren’t the embarrassing ones that take place on the NBA basketball court during half-time. And if your boyfriend went to the trouble that some of the guys went to above and you still said “no” then I would wonder what sort of romantic you are, perhaps a little too contemporary. These are geeks proposing it in a way that reflects their personalities. It doesn’t always have to be dull…

Every day I thank the lord that my husband didn’t even consider proposing in any of those ways. I would have said no. He asked me like a gentleman should, privately. Sheesh.
