That's a good joke, lol :D

But if, on the off-chance, you were serious:

So, should murder be legalised? The only reason I can think for it to be illegal, under your reasoning, is that other people might be affected by it - seeing that the victim is in no position to care. So, we can kill whoever we like, as long as we make sure to kill everyone who might be affected by that killing as well?

Great, I'd been really looking forward to slaughtering some of those homeless people that no-one cares about, and now I can!

The central argument for murder, or any taking of human life, being a crime is that it contravenes the right to life. If I kill you, or anyone, it doesn't matter that they don't care once they are dead, it matters on a moral level that I have denied them their natural life-span.

"Thus, in our reality, the only possible outcome is success."

...huh? That's not how these things work. Even if you subscribe to a "multiverse" hypothesis which suggests that everything happens somewhere, why should our somewhere be the one where the experiment is safe, even if, on the balance of probabilities it probably will be safe?

So you will never die in this universe? It seems that we are in some sort of "perfect" universe where nothing can or will ever go wrong - lucky, eh?

"I look at it this way: what will we potentially gain? What could we lose?"

We can't lose anything. Something that doesn't exist can't lose something. If the planet disappeared, what would you do? Something that doesn't exist can't be distressed at their ceasing to exist, and so on.

Thus, in our reality, the only possible outcome is success.

If this is supposed to recreate the big bang, wouldn't the universe be destroyed and replaced with another one? And then wouldn't CERN Switzerland be at the center of the new universe?
But I still wonder what will happen because it's 2 positive protons shooting at each other at the speed of light in opposite directions. So, wouldn't the equation for it be +-+=?? (positive-positive)
My guess is that the protons will just bounce back or cause an atomic explosion.

Hi,

I'm quite concerned by this experiment, even though there is little chance that it could cause any kind of earth/solar system destroying event.

I look at it this way: what will we potentially gain? What could we lose?

If gains in this field mean a deeper knowledge of our universe which will lead us to a greater form of "humanity" through peaceful interaction and understanding then go for it.

If, as I suspect, these experiments are just a way for physicists to make believe that they are important then there is something seriously wrong.

I have nothing against science (who could?) but so much of science, as so much of all human endeavour, is just a way to convince ourselves that what we are doing is important.

What do we stand to gain? Realisation that we are smaller than we already thought we were?

What, if improbably, do we stand to lose? Everything that humanity has ever been, is and will be as well as the countless, but no less significant, lives of every plant and animal.

Unless there is a really good reason, I just don't see the point of the risk, no matter how slight.

They say that particles like this are hitting us everyday
but dosent our planet have a shield to protect us?
So I guess this experiment does not!

Good point, Mackenzie. Unless they mean to carry out their threats before the LHC is activated. I imagine, though, that it's just a bunch of chest-beating.

Wait is it just me, or does "if you blow up the Universe, I'm going to kill you" seem rather non-sensical? If they blow up the Universe, they'll already be dead you certainly won't be around to kill them either.
