12-year-old gives pro-environment speech at UN Earth Summit 1992

June 6, 2008 by Kiltak |

Raised in Vancouver and Toronto, Severn Cullis-Suzuki has been camping and hiking all her life. When she was 9 she started the Environmental Children’s Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. They were successful in many projects before 1992, when they raised enough money to go to the UN’s Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Their aim was to remind the decision-makers of who their actions or inactions would ultimately affect. The goal was reached when 12 yr old Severn closed a Plenary Session with a powerful speech that received a standing ovation.

Believe it or not, what you are about to see has been filmed in 1992, yet the speech you’ll hear is now more relevant than ever.

Environmental extremism is nothing new. It used to be the ozone layer. Before that it was the fear of a new ice age. Then the rainforests. Now its Global warming.

Worshipping GAIA the earth goddess is the new mainstream religion for all of the godless athiests. We are all “eco-sinners” whos sins must be washed by the sacrifice of carbon emissions. The goal is an eden-type utopia where there is no mankind in conflict with nature.

Give me a break.

Hear hear!

She may enjoy living a primitive lifestyle and she may not be concerned about being able to find a job after all companies and industries have been shut down or nationalized in the name of Gaia, but some of us like our air conditioning, our Internet, our iPods, and having an income and not being on the government dole (welfare).

Belch: Lol, you may be right, but you have to admit that this is probably the best speech given by a 12 year old you ever heard :)

And while there’s a lot of hype around all the “oh my god we’re all going to die because the ecosystem will one day collapse” phenomenon, there’s actually a lot of good in what this little girl said.

I think she needs a spanking and be sent outside to jump rope with her friends. I looked at her wiki article. The girl is almost 30 and still in school having accomplished exactly zero in her life thus far except racking up a sizeable college debt.

There is nothing good in what she said; only alarmism and smug elitism.

Dont get me wrong. Im a staunch conservationist. But this girl is not advocating for conservation of the environment. She is a whiny liberal decrying capitalism and begging for redistribution of wealth, under the guise of environmentalism. Communism painted green instead of red is still communism.

If her speech would have been on pro life and how abortion was bad, or if it had been on the merits of wealth generated by a free market being the key to lift people out of poverty- would you have still posted the video just because she was twelve?

I’m not sure… probably not, because it wouldn’t have affected me as much… I remember myself as a kid about 20 years ago, have some of the same reflections she had.. That’s probably why I posted it.

No, Matu, I’m no bastard. I’m just sick and tired of brainwashed useful idiots like you trying to steal my money and my freedom (and destroy the USA). EnvironMENTALists = communists. AGW is a total hoax. Btw, I’m a conservationist. Bet you don’t even know what that is. Please wake up. I’d help you then.

Its easy for kids to say “you adults are ruining the environment for us,” but they all just grow up, realize the situation is more complex than they thought, and pollute just as much as the rest of us.
