You want to turn the "auto connect to unknown network" on by default?

Hmmm

Go to Start->Network->Network and Sharing Center... then click on "Manage wireless network".

Now open the properties of your network, it should be there somewhere.. (I don't have any vista laptop with a wireless connection around, so I can't tell for sure).

Gee, no shit, people can read the data you send over publically-accessible unencrypted connections! Get yourself a VPN client and send all your stuff through an encrypted tunnel opened to a location you trust. I'm required to use a VPN to connect to school wireless, but they include a .pcf for off-campus use too, so if I'm at an open hotspot, I just tunnel into the campus network so my stuff's all nicely encrypted.

Also, stay the hell out of Ad-Hoc networks. Man in the middle is fun!

I remember the dialog you mention in XP, but I haven't been able to find it in Vista. Vista has heavily revamped the networking control panel ("Network and Sharing Center" that you mention), especially the wireless network management. Vista also allows privacy and sharing settings on a per-network basis. So I'm guessing it's not relevant anymore. If I find something similar, I'll post it.

Hmm, I don't have a Vista laptop near me, so I can't tell for sure, but I think you're right. Vista doesn't connect to unknown wireless networks by default.

If you want to be sure, you can check the "Network and Sharing Center". If the option is available, it should be in there somewhere.

Any idea if this is required in Vista? I think Vista defaults to not connecting to unknown networks.
