Titanic search was originally a search for two nuclear subs

In what sounds like a plot outline for the X-Files, Doctor Bob Ballard has revealed that the discovery of the Titanic wreck was only achieved after accomplishing their main objective – finding the wrecks of two sunk US nuclear submarines – one of which was believed to have been sunk by the Soviet Union.

Apparently when Ballard approached the US Navy for funding to find the Titanic, they supposedly gave him a deal – find our submarines first and THEN you can find the Titanic.

But after finding the submarines, Ballard concluded from what he could see that the Soviets had had nothing to do with it and that both submarines had sunk from accidents. He then went on to find the Titanic – and from there we subsequently got James Cameron’s cheesy movie.
