What is the real reason for this project? Why spend 10 billion dollars to see particles collide? Is it really worth the risk? Steven Hawking is no Albert Einstein and I don’t have much faith in his theory of mini-black holes “evaporating”. If the LHC creates mini-black holes that do not evaporate, strangelets or monopoles, the planet is f@#ked. Even if there’s a 0.001% chance of a risk to the planet, the LHC should not be turned on.

Q: Why all the concern now?
When funding for the LHC was approved decades ago, scientists believed that there was no reasonable danger. But then scientists discovered a few years ago that the LHC might create something called a micro black hole, and CERN then predicted that it might create micro black holes at a rate of 1 per second. And the creation of just 1 micro black hole could potentially destroy the planet in our lifetime.
Q: But surely no scientist would purposefully destroy the planet, that is just not credible!
No, the scientists would not purposefully destroy the planet! But they might do it by accident and they might take risks that are much much higher than they are willing to tell you they might. Just like the managers that recommended Launching the Shuttle Challenger did not believe that it would explode. They knew there might be a reasonable risk because their engineers told them there might be a reasonable risk. But the managers said (paraphrase) “there is no proof of reasonable risk… launch!”

I must disagree with this, Alex.

I have found quite a lot of scientists who disapprove with the small black hole / no danger hypothesis.

The lawsuit which was placed in March at the district judge in Honolulu explains quite well the main issues (see http://www.notepad.ch/blogs/index.php/legal/).

Mini black holes, if they are created, will be so tiny and live for such short lifetimes that there is absolutely no chance that they will suck anything in, let alone the Earth.

Remember that black holes are only as strong as the mass they contain. Mini ones made from several sub-atomic particles will be incredibly weak. There is a reason why the only people who are worried about this aren’t physicists. The question was asked by physicists before the LHC was built, and the answer was found to be a conclusive no. Unfortunately, a lot of people have yet to get their facts straight.

Personally, I think sucking the planet into a black hole is a great idea. Get rid of all spam and all Real Estate Agents in one go. Turn it on… I wanna see what happens

We all know that the world top scientists in the world are working on this.

But due to political and military pressure, the CERN has absolutely to keep the 21. May and specially the July deadline.

The new safety report has not yet been delivered - but was promised, all the warm up tests have been cancelled.

Running such a thing as the CERN requires lots of money and the customers are waiting.

You COULD NOT BELIEVE how much the possible inventions out of this are important for the interestes of the army.

Please, just read. Don’t at all feel pressured to act. You are your own judge.

CERN has cancelled all warm up tests for LHC in order to keep the deadline. The already lost nearly 3 years after a large explosion in the 27 km tunnel system below Geneva where the want to collide particels at speed over light speed (400000 km per second). Now the are under a lot of pressure by politicians, the military and its own management.

This system is not ready. The new safety report has not been released. The old reports don’t prove safety anymore.

They are from 1999.

It is possible that this Universe in 35 days does not exist anymore. And these are not esoterists these are scientists who think so.

Safety of this project should be reviewed or our Universe may be gone. Sucked up into a black hole actually.

Hawking Radiation, the unwitnessed black hole theory that suppose to keep earth safe when the Large Hadron Collider creates Micro Black Holes in a month, has already been proven to be in error when Stephen Hawking lost a bet to John Preskill of Caltech back in 2004. Stephen Hawking then recalculated his figures to keep his theory in name afloat. And we’re suppose to accept theory and let CERN risk the whole planet so they can shout “Told you so!”

What I like to know from CERN is the Earth in danger if Hawking Radiation proves to be in error again, not evaporating micro black holes so they wont grow?

Stephen Hawking is only famous because his original theory which was in error for over 30 years made him famous, so are we to trust his new theory of the same name now?

The CERN site as well as their site for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) wont even state the Hawking Radiation theory since it has been proven to be in error, but states a process by Stephen Hawking, the man who made the error, will keep earth safe.

All this can be Google.

To CERN supporters, I know this will get under your skin. Please counter this comment with intelligent comments.

School us, and not just spout CERN’s rhetoric with colorful insults, minus anything to prove they’re right.

Fen, give US an argument that this will NOT produce a mini-blackhole and I will agree with you. WHAT THE HELL do you know about what will happen there? What if you were to experiment a nuclear bomb thinking that it’s only a microwave oven? There are 50% or more that on the day the LHC will power on, some catastrophic event will happen, why the hell do we need to risk that? Even if it doesn’t, will that experiment make you live better? Will you be happier with your life? Do you know that all the security feeling about this experiment comes from an unproven theory of S.Hawking? Do you think that a sour human being, trapped inside a slowly dying body, really loves life? I bet he’s been cursing the universe ever since he got his curse. And he’ll be laughing at us when the new big bang happens.

I’m just waiting until someone calls the LHC witchcraft and tries to burn it.
