If the drive actually spins up and stays running, you might have some luck with an external enclosure and plug it into a system that can recognize it. After all, a majority of computer failures result from an invalid OS or software configuration issue.

If you heard grinding/clicking or the drive does not stay spinning (you said the drive sounded normal), THEN I'd be worried a lot more.

You can trying spinrite. However, if you begin to hear any noises I would stop right away. If you have a large amount of bad sectors spinrite could take some time to complete.

Hard drive recovery from a reputable firm could range from 500.00 to 2000.00 depending on the size of the hard drive and the failure of the media. The more expensive would be an invasive recovery.

Rob,

How much does a service like this run? My dad's Macbook drive supposedly crashed on him (that's what Apple said, I don't believe it 'cause my dad said he heard no grinding noises coming from the computer). Anyway, I have the drive and was contemplating seeing if I could run Spinrite on it, but if I can't, a DR service is the only option.
