The machine's official purpose is to recreate the Big Bang and study space molecules. But a side-purpose (and supposedly un-intentional purpose) of the machine is apparently the beginnings of time travel. Although part of the CERN facilities are on Swiss soil, the majority of the facilities are in France and it's in fact an European research facility (CERN has 20 member states).
