Apple used to be called Apple Computers. The Macintosh was the computer, which is where the Mac bit in MacBook, Mac Pro etc came from. Not all their computers were called Macintosh (Mac) as when they first started, one business unit was making the Apple Lisa (I think, if my Pirates of Silicone Valley memory serves me right) and the other, which Steve Jobs supported, was making the Apple Macintosh.
