January 26, 2008 by Kiltak |Windows Vista hasn’t been the most successful operating system. Since day one it has been plagued with poor support, dwindling sales, and even users who are downgrading to XP after forking over the cash for Microsoft’s latest blunder.
Apparently the boys in Redmond have misunderstood the anguished cries of countless Windows users and have decided to make what looks like a whole new version of the same product.
As of yet it seems like nothing short of a repackaged version of Vista with a few improved media features and a new boot screen. However, the early beta releases of ‘Longhorn’ looked like XP too. So the images and video might not be an accurate representation of what 7 will look like. On the outside it seems like little has changed, but until someone does a top-down analysis of the system, there’s no telling exactly what changes have been made.
The whole thing doesn’t look too interesting at the moment unless you’re a Microsoft exec. looking to punish those who leaked this ‘gem’ onto the internet. In which case, don’t even bother. No one is really looking forward to it anyway.

I also love all these articles about how unsuccessful Vista has been, all exactly the same as the articles written about XP a few years back. Despite the fact that every new PC ships with Vista.
I’ll say like the folks on engadget said… if this was an elaborate trick, then it must have taken the prankster a lot of time to do..
A complete boot up screen with animation, new menus, etc…. Hmmm..

Vista’s “success”, or lack thereof, has no relationship to the number of new PC’s preloaded with this atrocity (correlation != causation); a more telling gauge would be the dismal sales of consumer upgrade packages. Additionally, I can tell you that every major manufacturer of laptops offers a free XP retrograde kit - what does that indicate my friend?
uh that looked just like vista, even media center looks identical. Nice and fake I say!
It might very well be real. Windows is known for being leaked early on. Happened with Vista too. I say we don’t count our chickens yes because this may or may not be real. It’s very microsoft-like to release beta versions which look exactly identical to previous ones.
I don’t really understand the windows version numbers but surely version 7 would have version number like 7.x, not 6.1 like it shows in the video (0:51).

As a Linux user, if there’s something I usually have in mind is that Linux distros can be easily disguised. Maybe this is a Linux distro disguised to look vista-like….but then again, I had heard some rumors about Windows 7.
That is highly unlikely, Linux is based on the premise of free, open source software. As such, a Windows logo would not be present. Had there been a theme with a windows logo, Microsoft’s legal squad would have been all over it.
She means that it’s easy to disguise linux as vista, xp, or any other OS… There’s some very convincing XP and Vista skins out there.
Of course, but the amount of work that would have gone into making all the screens and changing the file system etc. etc. it would be an incredible amount of work. Although there are very convincing skins, not only do they have a new boot screen but said screen uses a trademarked logo which would have been illegal. Doesn’t anyone remember Lindows? (now Freespire)
With all the criticism of Microsoft you would figure there would be another competitor with the gun power to tackle the beast. Apple is targeted mostly at consumers leaving the company only as big as buyers pockets. Microsoft built its monolopy on big business dollars. Linux is reliant on the computer geeks, a passive attempt. Every time a company introduces a product or software to challenge the giant they get copied some how. Ipod- Zune Google- Windows Live
Apple OS - windows. The highest paid ‘cloner’ of our time is big Bill Gates.
Well I guess you anti-MS zealots just must be right about Vista’s failure. That purveyor to truth, Apple even tells me people are downgrading. Wow, I guess there is no such thing as a corporate standard which might account for that.
Downgrades are a normal part of every new OS cycle and every manufacturer produces a set of products with downgrade kit capabilities. For those of you who had your heads out of your butt in 2002, this happened a lot with XP.
Of the 21 Vista home users I know personally zero have downgraded. I have personally rolled out Vista and Office 2007 in 4 corporate environments and have precisely ONE user who does not like it (and he admits his dislike is based on the fact he is a techno-hermit who hates change of any sort). I even rolled it out to in a primarily Mac shop (btw, I am also an authorized Mac dealer) and they LOVED it.
The new deployment/imaging tools combined with Vista’s excellent searching and file navigation facilities make it an ideal upgrade from other O.S.
MS sold 90+ MILLION copies of Vista in the first year. That is DOUBLE the number of XP copies sold in the first year. MS profits were UP a massive 78% in the last quarter of 2007. Ya… I guess all you crApple people must be right, Vista is a huge failure.
I will readily concede I that in all deployments I have made several notable changes:
1: Disable UAC
2: Disable NIC Autotuning
3: Change the logon screen graphic
4: Enable Verbose Mode for Startup/Shut Down
and several other minor items.
However, all of these changes can be readily accomplished.
100% of the anti-Vista people I know fall into one of three groups:
1: massively ignorant technophobes (Apple advert. watchers)
2: Apple / Linux zealots
3: VERY low grade IT tech’s who have an inability to learn and are afraid of the future.
Vista (like ALL products) has its issues but it is vastly superior to XP and certainly to OS X.
I wish Apple and Linux well and I think they have a deserved market share. I am not pro-MS and anti-bull-sh*t.
You sound like those kind of people MS sends all over Linux-friendly webpages to talk trash about other 0S and extoll the supposed virtues their crap.
Oh yeah, and 10 out 10 people I know to use Vista, all of them are desperately looking for a downgrade. And they are not technophobes, geeks or idiots, just NORMAL PEOPLE who like their OS to be helpful, not a complete nuisance.
