Holy cool green car Batman!
The Aptera looks like the results of a one night stand between a sports car and a stealth jet. Made by Carlsbad, California company Aptera Motors, it’s currently available for pre-order and will be coming out in two versions in 2008 and 2009. An electric version expected to get 120 miles to a charge will be coming out this year with the 300MPG gas version to follow in 2009. It has a camera system connected with in-dash video screens to give you a 180 degree view of what’s behind you and comes decked out with traction control, a low center of gravity, and a wide wheel base to keep you on the road and out of the hospital.
The Aptera retains the genes of its sports car mother with a impressive 0-60 in under 10 seconds topping out at 90MPH. Aptera Motors expects the battery charge to take 2-4 hours the car and come in a multitude of colors including white, white, and white. They are considering offering more colors after launch but point out that white is the most efficient color in terms of the cooling load.
Unfortunately the Aptera will only be available in sunny California to start while they work out distribution and maintenance partnerships but if the thing is half as cool as it looks it shouldn’t be too long before us East Coasters can get our hands on one.
Check out the Aptera in action in this YouTube video.
I’m asking Santa for one of these next year.

Shea Gunther is the result of a one night stand I had several years ago..
The Aptera rulez!
And what about E2? If I’m not mistaken, about 20 years ago there was a car named E2 from GM that has accessibility for 500km by average speed 110km/h - the documentary about that car is “who killed the electric car” - warmly recommended.
BTW where is space for luggage? On the solar cells?
Whoot! The car of every man’s dream. Also the car of the future. The market is waiting for this vehicle.
Skinny: You’re thinking of the EV-1. Both the original and range-improved versions had less range than this car. This car is also over twice as energy efficient from a battery-to-wheel perspective, and three times from a socket-to-wheel perspective. Luggage goes in the trunk, of course. 15.9 cubic feet of space back there — not small at all.
