Instead, they were designed to gather preliminary data on likely sites for future exploration.

im in class and im discovering about spirit and oppertunity and i have one question do they know exactly if they found water or life on mars

At present, there is no conclusive evidence of either water or life. However, there are very strong indications of both. Trouble is, neither lander is really equipped to answer the question of life, or even water, conclusively. Instead, they were designed to gather preliminary data on likely sites for future exploration.
