Simroid: The retarded dentist-training robot (Video)

November 29, 2007 by Kiltak |

Here’s Simroid, a new robotic dental patient designed to act as a training tool for dentists. Not only can this robot follow vocal instructions, but it can also react in a human way to certain situations. So if the dentist in training pokes Simroid a bit too deep in the gums, the robot can respond with an “Ouch!” or a hand gesture. It also apparently has the reflex to gag if anything falls down in its throat.

And yes, I know, the thing really looks retarded. I’m sure I’d have trouble working on it while staying serious. With a mouth like this, the robot really looks like it would be better suited to… Ok, you can forget what I just said… I certainly wouldn’t want to be perceived as a pervert by our audience!

Speaking of perverts, I can’t help but wonder about the implications that a robot like this one—developed in the interest of science—might have on other industries.

It seems a logical evolution of robotics to extend into the adult entertainment industry. In essence, what we are seeing here could be the prototype for the blow up dolls of the future: dolls driven by voice commands and responsive to physical touch.

Not that I’m into that, or anything…

Finally! A dental patient that won’t go screaming to the cops when you feel her up while she’s under anesthesia. ;-)

I think for the amount of money it took to make this, they could have hired someone to sit in a chair and let a dentist student stab them in the gums.

Well actually, it says that it has a senso that will detect if it is touched inappropriately… This is specified in the end of this article… http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071128/sc_afp/lifestylejapantechnologyrobothealthoffbeat;_ylt=AgaU3pwNZLdb7v8JTklZAVoPLBIF

Here where I live you can get free dental care if you go to the university. The dentists in training will do it for free :) Sort of like having a robot patient.
