Yes, Wikipedia is great. But how long it took you to hear about Wikipedia? And what level of knowledge did you already had on the subject before reading more about it on net?

They are not on that level yet. The number of people who are going to use it as you described is so low it's not worth of mentioning. In time, yes. But now, nope.

I ws in Vietnam recently and they are country thats developing really fast. But do you know what they use computers for the most? Buying CD's to listen to music and watch videos, play games ( and not Halo 3, not even close ) and chatting. They do not comprehend internet and what it could be used for. Imagine what will happen in another, not so developed, country.

The laptops can be a good tool for education, though. Who hasn't spent hours reading Wikipedia and learning more in those few hours than in a full semester studying the subject? Being computer-literate will also help the kids in the future. If they can use computers and read, they have a much better chance of getting a job that isn't in a sweat shop or gathering chocolate or coffee beans or herding cows.

The first time I heard about this I thought the same thing - they want the money when they create a market. It sounds to brutal but I can't see anything else. Those people need food, water and education to improve their lives.

I can't see how laptops will help them. They need time to get to the level of using them for their own good, if you know what I mean.
