How to cut glass with a string
November 16, 2007 by Kiltak |
I always thought that the only way to cleanly cut a piece of glass was with a glass cutter, but by looking at the following clip, it seems that you can also do with with a piece of string and a little acetone. Is this another one of those fake “how to” videos? Just be careful if you try, playing with acetone and fire could be dangerous.

Nice tip! I personally like this one:

Looks safer and easier…
The idea is sound. You apply a narrow ridge of heat to the glass and then cool it quickly. The glass then breaks at the point where the temperature change is the greatest. It’s like putting an empty glass coffee pot on the burner and having it crack. Only in this case, it’s controlled.
I’d be afraid the bottle might explode into little glassy bits. If it did you would definitely get hurt.
cool!
FAKE
the only thing that could in principle cause this sort of “cutting” would be rapid cooling of the glass causing a controlled break. The thing is, there needs to be quite a bit of heat transferred to the glass for it to work. that being said, I really doubt that this would work in a reasonable amount of time.
You have to be stupid to even imagine this is a ‘fake how to’.
Honestly.
