Playstation 3 fans rejoice, for the developers of arguably the world’s most popular movie codec have announced that they are working with Sony to bring us DivX support in the near future. This isn’t the first time we see DivX emerging on the Playstation 3, as we can see in this Kotaku article which already hinted it out.

TOKYO & SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–DivX, Inc. (NASDAQ:DIVX) today announced that DivX® video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified® products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.

With this new functionality, the Playstation 3 takes a very important step to become a great media center, whether it’s Anime or films, the process of watching media in your television will be less cumbersome for those of us who prefer to get our media fix from P2P networks.

In the meantime, Xbox 360 owners ask themselves whether or not they’ll be left out in the cold. Fortunately, it appears that the codec is also headed to the popular Microsoft console as DivX’s CEO recently hinted in the SMid Cap conference, although he also pointed out that the deal is still under a negotiation process.

Playstation 3 will support DivX. DivX support will be added with the next Playstation update.
But it will be for free?
