Also, HP doesn't honor the hardware warranty if the user installs GNU/Linux on it(!)

Nope Thinkpads along with Linux work just fine, only part is that you need to do some small hacks to get the new hardware functioning good.

So either they have drivers written for them or they have older hardware to which linux drivers already are available.

I've never had a problem running Linux on my old IBM Thinkpad. I would think ~~IBM~~ Lenovo would have a fairly easy time getting this going. I'm not sold on the linux on HP quite yet. I think HP is in Microsoft's pocket. HP named partner of the year
