Blizzard entertainment announced yesterday that the user-base of World of Warcraft (WoW) just reached 9 million players, one million more than they had at the start of this year.
If the fantasy world of Azeroth were an actual country, it would be the 90th most populous country on earth, right in front of Somalia, Austria and Israel.
“We’re thrilled that gamers around the world have continued to embrace World of Warcraft so enthusiastically,” Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard, said. “We’ve worked hard to provide a compelling experience for our players, and we plan to continue updating the game with exciting new content for them to enjoy for many years to come.”
Now, let’s crunch some numbers. Blizzard charges a monthly fee of $14.95. Multiply that by nine million, times twelve months equals a yearly revenue of… One billion, six hundred fourteen million, six hundred thousand.

Multiply by 9 million… well yes but, did you know Blizzard does not use a subscription model in the far east (their largest user base is in China). So they earn a lot from the few and next to nothing from the many.
For The Horde! lol I almost dropped out of the WoW population this past month, but have renewed my love for the game since. I’ve been playing for about a year and a half and it’s the best game I’ve ever been a part of.
