Everything's been so medicalized, it's insane. Sad? Take pills. Lonely? Take pills. Bored in class? Take pills. Having ADHD (but not knowing it and thinking I was "normal" until recently), I can say that pills aren't the only fix. They're a fix when the teacher is terrible. Good teachers keep the class's attention and will challenge the kids. When I had challenging, interesting classes, I paid attention. Boring classes that taught things I'd learned years before from an encyclopedia were ignored. I guess stupid kids with AD(H)D have a different experience, but smart kids with AD(H)D do well (and often have AD(H)D overlooked because of it) as long as they are challenged and (in my case at least) they are taught from a book rather than random-stuff-the-teacher-says (because it's easier to learn by reading--you can re-read if your mind wanders--than by trying to pay attention in class). Think of the Mentor's "Hacker Manifesto" and how he talks about being bored in class being taught to reduce fractions <i>again</i>. When you have AD(H)D and teachers doing that, it's a *bad* combination for your grades ("I know this already so I don't need to do the work" thinking). Then it makes the point about how discipline is now "abuse." Was it "abuse" when my mom put pepper on our tongues for sticking them out (nevermind that my brother liked it)?
